Post Is the pet shop right?

After my nelly passed away I decided I'd give my love to another little hammy, but I wanted something different as nothing would be the same as nelly so I went for a syrian and a boy (nelly was a dwarf and a girl).
When at the pet shop and they were talking to me they said that cabbage and lettuce is not good to give to hansters where my nelly loved cabbage? Was I feeding nelly wrong?

As far as I know lettuce and cabbage is fine with hamsters but should only be fed in small amounts as it can cause health problems if too much is fed. I never feed anything that has the risk of causing health problems just in case. Honestly it depends on the hamster. Your hamster was fine with it but your new hamster could be different. Hope this helped.

I think I was told on here that cabbage and lettuce wasn't a good idea as well. Don't worry there are plenty of other veg they like - broccolli, carrots, baby corn, cucumber, green beans.

I think there's a thing about iceberg lettuce possibly causing diarrhoea if fed too often because of the v high water content. Cabbage is grand as far as I've heard.

Pets corner say to avoid lettuce yet other sources recommend... Personally I have had 5 Syrians, all have loved both lettuce and cabbage, more so than other veg, they all lived long lives and were never ill. Interestingly they have all turned their nose up at green beans so maybe these are bad?

Cc will have your green beans

Thinking about it cucumber has a v high water content and its v recommended for hydrating hams. I'm going to say don't buy iceberg anyway because it's yuck!

Lettuce is OK as an occasional treat but avoid Iceberg. Cabbage occasionally and a small piece is fine.
Broccoli, green beans and peas are favourites for my 2!

Romaine is probably the best lettuce for them but most are ok except iceberg just not much or too often, a little cabbage is fine but again only a little & not too often.

If I happen to have a lettuce in the house, I usually take a small piece off for Chubs and he scoffs it, but he only gets the one piece as a treat. Normally he gets a garden pea every few days and sometimes broccoli if I have any in. Lettuce is mainly water like cucumber, so in moderation, it won`t do any harm. x
