Hamster and dog situation?
Hey guys, ive had a pet dog for the past 4 years, (quite a big dog, around 5'8 when on his hinde legs!), recently he's slept in my room from seperation anxiety since my mum and her husband (who was the "pack leader") have split. But since I got my hamster and I have an open top bin cage he hasn't been aloud, ive introduced them and the first time he tried jumping at the hamster, now when around my hamster he just shakes and stares at him. I'm not sure if it's from excitment and wanting to play or he sees him as food due to being trained to chase off mice? Is it better to completely banish my dog from my room?

I would say yes! And put a lid on the bin cage just in case your dog gets in the room by accident. He's tall enough to reach into the bin if he really wants to. Is there any way you can secure the bin so that your dog can't reach it? At least at night when he wants to sleep there? Or perhaps get some professional training help for the anxiety.

Rather be safe than sorry.... I have not read anywhere that dogs have actually attacked a hamster, Syrian or a dwarf. Perhaps people do not want to admit it and create a flood of admonishment from others.

Don't let the dog and the hamster together ever. The dog may think it's a toy / mouse / food whatever and kill it whether by accident or not. I think you should find a safe room to put the hamster in at night. The cage needs a lid however as your dog is already suffering from anxiety and his life is upside down the last thing you want is him to be futher stressed by being banished from his usual sleeping space!
Each animal has its needs so you do need to try and balance getting it right for them all.

Thank you, I do put my hamster ontop of my wardrobe when my dog comes in during the day, I just put the cage on the floor at night so if I wake up I can just look down and check, I'll try letting the dog sleep in with the hamster cage up high tonight, I just don't want the sounds of the wheel and eating ect to set him off

Re: Hamster and dog situation?
What kind of dog do you have? Your dog is slightly taller than me when he stands on his hind legs. WOW!
Your bin cage definitely needs a lid, the last thing you need is a stressed hamster if he gets near, this smell will be a threat to your hammie.
I too would keep him out, I've not heard of a dog attacking hamsters but it could happen.
