Question My Syrian Hamster, Nico acting strange???? :( :(

Me and my nico are close and only really likes me and my boyfriend touching him, anyone else and he gets really stressed.

Some signs of him acting weird were:

I woke up to him scratching the bottom of his plastic sleeping house with his teeth, this got me major worried!! especially as it wasn't just once (he's got lots of wood to naw on?)

He hasn't been on his wheel during the night for about 3 nights now.

I always have our play time around the same time each evening where we sit/play and he'll go into his ball for awhile, but when I open the cage he ignores the ball and hides tissue over himself.

He has slowly stopped coming for the treats I hide around the cage, and I haven't seen him when i'm in come down for some water.

He seems to just want to stay in his plastic hut all day and all night...

I had let my friends sister pet him in bed and he didn't like it all, he started chattering and did the body twist they do as warning and I calmed him and told her to stop. Do you think it caused it? Is he ill???

They can be easily spooked. Cleo is quite a nervy hamster & doesn't seem to like "outsiders", i.e. People she doesn't know, in her cage. Also she hates having her head touched or anywhere hear her head & when a family member went to pet her they went straight for the head - they're a cat person so seemed natural to them. She was quite off for a few days & didn't want to come out or have a lot to do with me.
If Nico got a bit agitated by his "experience" then give him a few days of minimal contact - like when you first bring them home & build it up from there. I'm sure he'll be back to himself before you know it. He just needs to work out that nothing bad is going to happen when he comes out

@Welma Thank you alot for your response, I got super worried! Yeah i think he could be spooked so i shall leave him for a night to rest and get himself back into shape. The girl owned 4 pet rats so if he smelled the scent of them, that would scare him alot too! aswell as being petted by someone unknown

That could be it - the smell of the rats. He's so used to you and your boyfriends scent so this girl who has rats has probably scared him. Nico will come round, the scent has spooked him.
Bless him!
