Re: The Radiator Siege
Defenses have now been reinforced with cardboard. However he still shows no sign of stopping his onslaught....

Oh by golly he is!!!
Never underestimate the allure of the forbidden.
Blankets and defence barriers only serve to enhance and enrage!!!! Been there, binned the myriad of bitten towels and sacrificed many a book to Basil's carpet/lintel vendettas.
PS. Spike is a gorgeous looking!

I seriously agree with you! That throw just makes him madder than ever. Sometimes after having a good go at it he'll stop and just chatter at it angrily. I'm currently looking at getting a cheap fire guard to put around the radiator. It's either that or hardboard cut into 3 section's with hinges. The tricky bit is the skirting board so it'll need to be notched. I dunno , I'm still looking at options. I'd do cardboard but I know he'll just chew through it. I put the cardboard down to protect the carpet as he has already made a nice hole I'm going to have to explain to my landlord at some point but 10 minutes later he just lifts it up?! I'm starting to feel like I may just be a little out matched here

Re: The Radiator Siege
So Spike likes to play in the storage tub where I keep most of his stuff. I have no idea why but he has such fun I let him. I do however take out the food and treats I keep in there as he has a habit of getting into them . So I was reading a text my husband sent me when I heard a noise and saw that Spike was no longer playing in the tub but the packet of Supreme Science Selective that was sitting on the floor next to it was making a noise...

I am not sure what he was thinking or even doing since he didn't eat or pouch any of it. Actually he looked a little like the cat I had when I was younger when it had some catnip. All I know is he wasn't this concerned about sourcing food until his Great Wall Adventure so I can only assume he was trying to figure out how to get all of it to his stash under the bed

Re: The Radiator Siege
This little guy needs to play in the bathtub. He needs something high enough where he can't get out and smooth enough so he can't get a grip on anything. Also, nothing tall that he can climb on to get out either. This little hammy has a plan, I'm tellin' ya! Spike is the type of hamster where you need to be one step ahead of him or you'll lose him. Some hamsters are extra intent on finding a way out and he is definitely one of them. He's cute and adorable but he has no idea how bad it really would be if his exploring really took him away from you. I really would stop his free roaming until he's forgotten about the radiator, or you have come up with something that will securely block him from it. He's also a hammy who needs constant monitoring when he's out. He's really a handful.
Also...The tub drain needs to be covered with metal. That one'll go through a washcloth or little rubber plug like nobodys business!

He has me constantly on my toes. He doesn't get to free range on his own and I'm always with him, I would never dream of leaving him unsupervised . Trouble is I'm not that spry which is one of the reasons I let him free range in the first place. He used to play in the bath but he hates it so much it's pointless and it's also really physically awkward for me if I want to interact with him. I'm going to have a chat with my husband tomorrow I think and see what we can come up with, maybe get something put up this weekend. Before he got into the wall he used to just run around and play but now he's so focused on it I feel like it's become an obsession. If we had another room we could hamster proof we would but the bedroom is the safest. My husband went through it with a fine tooth comb after his adventure and I'm confident that that hole behind the radiator is the only potential escape route, not that he's not capable of getting himself into some sort of trouble. I love him so much but sometimes I do wish he was a little less like a hell-bent energizer bunny.

Re: The Radiator Siege
LOL. I can understand the not being so spry as I'm not either. But my hams stay in their playpens and none have tried to climb out. For which I am ever so grateful. I hope you can figure something out before you run out of towels.

Re: The Radiator Siege
Oh Spike, you're such a naughty boy!
Ruby, I don't envy you lol! He's so determined and this has been for days and still no let up.
You really need eyes in the back of your head.
But, I totally love him, I thought Twinkle was a handful but Spike outdoes her!
The sooner you get some guard up, the better!

Re: The Radiator Siege
Ha those foodie vids r hilarious. He is a total pickle. For what its worth, willow is just like that and hates the bath ..... But I discovered if I don't put her in her ball first and get in with her she will settle in there if I give her constant attention and let her burrow up my clothes endlessly. With that in mind I built her a huge playpen with all her toys and loads of improvised burrows and things plus some big cushions for me as I am not so spry either and get v achey sitting.... And she eventually settled. I didn't think she would as to see her digging her way thru the carpet she looks so determined. Mind u she has just discovered a corner which she is convinced is a weak spot... To get to it she has to climb up on to my shoulder and wave her arms to bursting before she gets a claw into the top edge of the cardboard, wedge the claw in and heave herself up like a mountaineer. What's funny is the number of times she will try, even tho she keeps falling off into my hands! Willow brave and bold......
