Love the updated title to Spike's thread!
You can buy cardboard egg boxes in the bird food section in P@H, you get half a dozen for £2.50.

Oooooh! Thanks Lizzy, I didn't know you could just buy the egg boxes from P@h - I'll definitely buy some next time I'm out that way!

I weighed Spike last night when I realised I hadn't done it in awhile - 212grams!! He's going to be 8 months in about 3 weeks so I wasn't expecting much more growth from him, last time I weighed him he was 205grams!

Spike has abandoned his lovely Cabin Leif House and made an open nest behind his wheel . At first I shrugged it off as Spike just trying things out but it's been over a week now and he has shown no signs of moving back. Also now I have to clear his wheel at night so the thing can move. My husband has suggested that it's because of the warmer weather and I suspect he might be right. Still, I feel a little sad as I really like his wooden house . I'm wondering now if I should take it out. It's really big and takes up a lot of room. If he's not using it is it really worth keeping it in? I have a much smaller wooden house I can put in it's place if he suddenly feels the urge to abandon his nest. What do you guy's think?

Also I'm going to have to rearrange his cage. I want to move his wheel but is that going to upset him because of his nest? I don't mind if that's where he wants his nest, it's his cage after all, but I want to move the wheel so he stops jamming it up with toilet paper. But then if I move it I have to move his saucer, which he likes but doesn't use as often, and it big and I don't know where to put it? Uuurgh! Why Spikey? I had everything set up so nicely and now I have to move things around .

I'm sure they do it on purpose, just wait until we think we've arranged things really nicely & got it just right then they go & change everything lol!
If it's only been a week I'd leave the cabing a bit longer & see if he sticks to the way things are now, it must be a bit of a pain having to clear around his wheel but they often do that themselves if they want a run.
They usually do things for a reason even though it often remains a mystery to us so I'd be inclined to let him do what he likes & leave him to it.

Thanks Cypher, I guess I'll leave Spike to whatever it is he's up too . He's due a clean out at the end of the month so if he's still using the open nest I'll take the Cabin Leif house out then and put in the small one for him. I honestly can't wait till I get his tank add-on and the full top level for his cage done so he has extra space. That flying saucer takes up so much room!! I've had to put it off another month due to some unexpected expenses and it's driving me a little crazy . Honestly, I know he's fine and he's in a big cage but he makes use of every inch of it so I can't help feeling that he'd really appreciate the extra run around room. Plus I just want to do it so badly

I'm going to put the link in for the video of my husband and Spike that didn't work last time. I have re-uploaded it so hopefully it works this time - so far it's my favorite video so I hope it works!

Love the video Ruby! Spike is quite a character!
The thing with the house, Twinkle did that and then went back to her house 2 weeks later! Now she's moved again but this time under the house and she's got a really great hideout. They so know how to drive us crazy lol! It's so true about getting the cage just perfect and then the hammie decides to uproot and cause mayhem.

I have no idea why but I have real problems watching vids on Photobucket, even my own so I gave up using it for vids & only use it for photos, so sadly I can't see yours, I'll try again later as it a sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't thing!

Can't wait to see what you do with all the extra space for Spike! I can imagine your impatience too lol!

Sweet Video Ruby it was nice to see Spike looking so relaxed
I have been wondering what a 'chilled' hammy looks like, my lot don't know the meaning of the word

I bet you are itching to get started on Spikes extension, once our minds are made up on something like this it is hard to have to wait, but it will be worth the wait I'm sure

Spike has always been a Daddy's boy. I do everything for him and give him all the attention he can handle but the moment my husband walks in it's like I don't exist . He's far happier to getting a cuddle from my husband than he is from me. Still, I find the two of them the cutest thing ever. The other day I had to go answer a call of nature during playtime so I handed Spike off to my husband who was in the lounge. I come back to collect him and I catch my husband whispering to Spike and giving him kisses and telling him "You're my favorite" and so on. Sweetest thing ever so I try not to be too jealous

Spike's extension is all consuming, seriously! I have a million ideas for layouts and whatnot. The worst part is I have the tank already and it just sits there taunting me . I know that 100cm is considered a decent size but with a Syrian once you put all the toys in there's so little space! I really wish there was a decent huuuge cage you could buy for a Syrian hamster that you didn't have to modify in some way - I don't get why commercial companies don't make them, surely a basic big cage is much the same to make as those fancy modular cages
