Default Hammy owners vs. non hammy owners

People that dont own hamsters really dont understand things at all. I bet 110% of you can relate to this.
-yes theyre cute, no theyre not good for your 2 year old child.
-yes the 15$ princess cage is cute, your ham will hate it.
-Picking up poop isnt the most disgusting thing in the whole world. we get over it
-i am aware hamster bedding is everywhere.. its like cat hair.. it doesnt go away, i can vacuum 100 times and i will still find bedding everywhere
-if you tell me my house smells like a hamster, thats not an insult, your house smells like a human.
-no i dont spend too much money on them, i love them.
-theyre not a cat, i cant just leave them alone for days at a time.
-if its mid night and they want ball time, guess who gets ball time, them.

haha, feel free to add anything you think of i just thought of all the things people say to me about my ham and figured i would put it on here for a few laughs

If your house smells like hamster you're doing something wrong, imo, unless someone is in heat there shouldn't be a noticeable smell. And as a confessed cat person you definitely can't leave cats alone for days, even less than you can hams!

The only thing I have to add is my housemate acting like she's a pet rock or an insect with little to no feelings or need for care. He's not a pet person but he won't even check on her water levels if I spend a night at my dads, never mind giving her a run in her ball! He flips out if I set a glass on his iMac for 1 second though...

Cats can't be left and hamsters don't smell I don't think. Leaving a hamster for a night is possible.
I find keeping the wood shavings in a carrier bag contains bedding mess in general. Hamsters ardent good pets for toddlers as most animals aren't until a child is older. Rats right be better.
Hamsters are so cute though. Also add on that you may buy more fresh produce, especially herbs when doing the food shop.

I would never leave my cats alone. When we go on holiday our neighbour looks after the cats as she has been for 20 years and we do the same for her.

Hamsters I leave for 1 night every Monday as I stay at my grandmas after college as I finish so late (9pm) and she lives closer to the college than I do. My parents are home however and do check on them and mum is happy to take them out if they want it. She says she doesn't want them before I get them but always falls in love with them.

More for the list

- a hamster maybe small but they do take up space. A small cage will NOT do!

- hamsters do need a wheel, I don't care how long it keeps you awake, buy a better quality silent wheel!!

- breeding just to have babies is NOT ok!

- letting unknown hamsters meet is NOT ok! Syrians NEVER!

- fights do happen, but when blood is showing, do not laugh it off as a play fight!! (Learnt from well known petstore)

My mum has said the same thing a few months back before I told her I was ordering a silent spinner! She had alot to say about that and changed her entire statement!

''you already have a wheel for him, what do you need another one for?''

well mother, it was your doing. So yes, £30 is being spent! This was after my 11" trixie was getting very rattley! She is fine now, I have had alot of conversations with her and she can now see how inadequate pet shop cages are and even told somebody in P@H once that the tiny combi 1 they were looking at shouldn't be used as anything more than a toilet for them!! HAHHAAHAHHA!

my sister wants to get my niece a hamster, cause she thinks mine is so cute. She shows me this cage. Its pink, sparkly, princess themed, smaller than i use as a travel cage, and my travel cage cant even fit a 6.5 inch wheel comfortably.. so it was pathetic.. i made her sit down and watch ErinsHamsters videos on cages, and everything and after about 35-40 minutes of me lecturing and her videos she didnt want one anymore.. haha.. they're a lot more maintenance than people think. little buggers are cute but very needy :P

Like Pixiehollow, I've only ever left my hamsters overnight a few times. I would give them a bit extra mix and some fresh food and top upon their water bottles.
As for a hamster smell, there isn't one in my home as I clean their toilet area daily and remove any old food.
Like Shannon said you can't leave cats for a few days. In fact no pet should be left alone for more than 24 hours.

I've known people who never had a pet as a child or adult and when we lost our family dog 15 years ago, a work colleague said to me "what are you crying for, it's just a stupid dog"?
I don't know how I managed to walk away because I really wanted to thump her for her cold comments and I didn't' speak to her for the day and when she asked why, I calmly told her that our dog was 17, a member of the family and that she wouldn't understand as she's never had a pet.
Some colleagues who have pets knew exactly how I felt and getting "sorry to hear about your pet" cards really helped me with my grief.
Until you've had a pet, you can't really comment. Also had a couple of family pet cats who were also members of the family
That bond and unconditional love is something I've always had with every pet.

They are needy! but they're so worth it <3 I'm watching Toby run in his wheel, while purposefully hanging his face out to stare at the shadow of his wheel on the wall. He's the weirdest little guy. ha ha.
Another thing people without hams don't get is that you're not supposed to let them
swim or take water baths...
I myself didn't know this in high school, as I did not have a computer or the internet and all this info... so the hamster I had at the time got baths... of course I did it in a closed , heated bathroom and he had his own towels and was completely dry and woarm before leaving the bathroom, I did hear that they can get ill if cold...but oddly, that hamster, Tai, lived to be 4 years old and was the sweetest, cuddliest thing in the world, and never showed signs of stress. Though I did keep his cage super clean every week... so maybe he just didn't get exposed to germs? He loved sleeping on me and just sitting with me and stuff.
But if I'd known I wouldn't have done it unless he really needed it...
