Pouches are for food, not marbles!
I was letting Rosie run around my bedroom (don't worry, no exposed electrical cords, ways to escape, etc.) and I didn't notice a small marble lying on the carpet. But Rosie did! I saw her pick up something and I quickly went to scoop her up and see what it was. Too late! Just as I realized it was a marble she jammed it into her cheek pouch. NOOOO!!!!! I freaked out! A million thoughts ran through my head; what if she manages to swallow it, what if it has poisonous toxins on it??? I tried to give her a peanut hoping she would spit out the marble to make room for the peanut, but no such luck. I remembered that she almost always saves any food I give her outside her cage and then deposits it in her nest once I put her back in the cage. So I calmed down and gently placed her back in the cage and waited.
About ten seconds later she went into her nest and spit out the marble. SUCCESS!
No more marbles, naughty ham!

Haha, oh dear! XD I probably would have panicked too! They know just the right way to give us heart attacks, don't they? I'm glad you were able to get it back without further incident silly, naughty Rosie!

Re: Pouches are for food, not marbles!
When I was picking up the chinese I'm hamsitting he was running around the kitchen table (normal for him!) and he found one of my friend's (his human) stud earrings. It was going straight into the pouch. PANIC! He was right beside me so I got it off him in time. He was awfully good and didn't mind me snatching it straight from his mouth!
How do earrings and marbles look like food?! Worse than human babies sometimes!

I think we all have a bit of "crow" in us when it comes to sparkly things

Re: Pouches are for food, not marbles!
I think they would pouch anything! It probably looked like food (a grape?! ). I find if I let Charlie go 'into' something while he is out of the cage, (ie little boy's welly, or a cup) he drops everything out of his pouch and starts eating it. Sometimes I have to kind of 'tip' him out of the welly when he won't come out and he always comes out with empty pouches followed by a whole load of food he has emptied! Strangely he isn't interested in the food once it is out of his pouch and won't pouch it again. So if it happens again, put a cup or something for him to crawl in, with a bit of toilet paper and he'll probably deposit it in there!

Hamsters just want to accessorize, like the rest of us.....not everything in their stashes is for eatin'

Lol! I reckon then that is why they keep so many of those black seed poos - to make into necklaces. Or belts in the case of male hamsters!
