What sex syrian hamster would you suggest?

I registered on here last week and have been reading up all about hamsters. I have bought my cage food, bedding, toys and have it all set up and ready! all I have left to get is the hamster. There is where Im stuck! I have heard boys are tamer and calmer than females (is this true?) but I saw a lovely female I wanted. But obviously as a first hamster I dont want a tricky one

which sex is the calmer more easier to tame in general.

(p.s just to add. I am an adult and am taking full responsibilty for the care of the animal and what vet bills they may incurr, I also have guinea pigs and children)

Welcome to the site, it's great here.

From my experience, I've found that boys tend to be more chilled out. Ladies are lovely but they may have a little a bit of attitude (which I love) and they do smell when they come into season every few days (my boyfriend refuses to touch them when they smell!).

Of course each hamster is different - you get grumpy boys and soppy girls.
But personally I would recommend a boy for a first hamster.

Hiya

Thanks for the reply I went with my gut instinct and got a little boy.. hes white on his belly and a tan colour on top. he is very nice. A little (understandably!) scared but has climbed on my hand and taken a bit of food from me and is currently exploring his new cage

His name is ..... drum roll LOL ****ALFIE****

I already had that name in my head (hence my forum name) but when I saw him there he just looked like an alfie so I just had to have him!

He is up in my room in the quiet to settle in to his new cage until probably tomorrow when I will bring him downstairs and introduce him to my 2 kids

I look forward to becoming a member of this forum, keeping pets is very addictive!

hiya loving the namew alfie, my horse is called alfie aswell! yes boys are better for first hammys. they are more friendly and less nippy. all the girls i have had bit and none of the boys did. i dont get girls now. good luck with your new addition! x
