Yesterday we went up to Audenshaw to pick up a rescue hammy that had been dumped in a box in Salford with, what only could be assumed as hi2 breeding partners and a litter of babies. Luckily they had been found and a lady was fostering them-apparently it had been done before and the rspca reckon it is a breeder who keeps dumping them...its so sad...only the adults were left, so I said i'd take the boy.
So, we went to meet him and he is the most mild tempered docile little guy, especially after what he has been through. He is ginger and white, and to be honest, i think he is quite old too. But he is so lovely!
Got him home and put him in his new cage with lots of toys and he didnt know what to do with himself!
I left him to it for the afternoon and by the time i got back he'd made a massive bed and gone to sleep.
Later that evening i went to check on them all (i have another syrian and 2 robos), and offered him a hamster cookie. He took it from me ever so gently and had a nibble. Once he realised he liked it, he showed some odd behaviour.
Carrying it in his mouth, he literally walked around the cage over and over again, through his bed, and round again, until finally he carried it up to the top level of the cage and ate some. He seemed really worried that it was going to be taken from him, poor little guy.
I also noticed that he repeatedly removes his food stash from his bed piece by piece, only to put it back in again! Has anyone else had a hamster so compulsive? Does it mean anything?
He looked so tired and so sad when i collected him yesterday, i felt so sorry for him, I just hope he has a happier time with us. He is definately an old man.
I will add some photos of him and my other boys, Cow, Sam and Freddie, later this week as I am off and have the time! I will also try and host a version of the christmas card i am going to make for this year of Cow in a Christmas pudding toy
