Is my Syrian Underweight?
I've always known my hamster is small, I think it's quite cute. Sometimes I consider her 'Bite Sized' even However, she seems a bit underweight and I am a bit worried about her.
She is 108 grams and is almost 10 months old or more. She might even be a little over a year. I beleive I got her at 4 months so maybe 14 months? Anyways, If she is underweight how can I maybe grow her some pudge?

Nuts, high protein foods, mealworms, pasta.. If she's a Syrian, a bit of fresh fruits, (natural sugar).. Porridge.. Those foods and I'm sure many more will help with extra calories.

Re: Is my Syrian Underweight?
Thanks! I don't know if my parents would want me to get meal worms though. Lol. I'll tell you how her progress is in the next couple of weeks, I'll probably give her some cheese every couple of days some nuts other days, and her normal fresh foods including romain lettuce, red pepper, green pepper, celery, carrots, and sometimes various fruits including apples and grapes.
What kind of nuts are safe for hamsters. If i look in my pantry I currently have pecans and some almonds. And peanut butter 'don't know if that counts though. Lol.

Re: Is my Syrian Underweight?
You can buy mealworms freeze-dried I've found that parents don't tend to be bothered so much by freeze-dried bugs.
Careful with cheese, as hamsters can sometimes be a bit lactose intolerant (in fact most animals are after infancy: they actually lose the enzymes required to digest it. Humans are the only ones who choose to drink milk after weaning) it's okay as a treat but keep an eye on how your hamster reacts to it.
Pretty much any nuts are okay for hamsters, the only ones that are debated are almonds. Bitter almonds are always a no-no, but sweet ones (the kind sold for human consumption) are okay. ALWAYS remove the shell from almonds, as they are poisonous.
Peanuts, walnuts, and pecans can all be given in the shell, but walnuts and pecans I would suggest cracking first since the shells are so hard.
Find raw nuts if you can: a lot of the ones sold for human consumption are roasted and salted, and have added oils and such.

Re: Is my Syrian Underweight?
Lastly: 108 grams still falls within the normal range for a syrian. If you think she's a bit underweight for her size, some of the foods mentioned would definitely benefit her, just be careful not to overdo it I hope it goes well! Please do keep us updated!

Re: Is my Syrian Underweight?
You could try dry cat food. My wife feeds our cat on tesco fish flavour dry food biscuits. I give these as treats and my hams love it. Ginger (syrian) does not like mealworms. Greens are ok. Be careful how much green and red pepper you give as too much can cause stomach problems (I read somewhere, but cant remember where). Too much lettuce can be bad as it is like a laxative for them and can cause diarhoea ( hard to spell, gives then the sh runs). lol Fruits if they like them. I read bananas can be given but are full of sugar.
Porrige either the dry flakes or made up is usually loved.
My Ginger is supposed to be a year old or she could be 4 months old, but she weighs 118g.

Yeah, she may not be underweight. If she doesn't feel underweight then I'd trust she's not

If your Hamster was store bought 108 grams is pretty good size for your hammy.

Thanks Nancy. You would know! Even still, My friend has a hammy she isn't nearly as good as I, as she did barely any research and started out with a tiny cage and is still in a small enclosure. ANYYYWAYY... She is a lot bigger than mine is maybe cause of long hair?
