It's purely for storage/carrying and has nothing to do with digestion. They're just shopping bags so they don't have to keep running back and forth from the burrow, as they travel many miles in a night, looking for food and gathering it in the pouches.

Yep as Bunsey as said purely for carrying stuff around. Females have even been known to carry young pups in their pouches if they need moved and they will also transport bedding to the nest in the pouches.
