to get a tort you need a yellow male and a black female. Yellow is a dominant gene so it will be passed to father-daughter-mother-son.

I was pretty concerned about laxitive chocolates too, but then again, you only have to go as far as the sugar free section at any store to get that effect!

I like Cora though!

Have a good night Drkmck!

Whoo, awesome. I wasn't sure myself, I've been trying to google it but google isn't cooperating.

Yeah, I think it's prettier than Machi as a nickname.

You can get it with other colours as well, with a probably similar process... not sure.

- From Holmden Hill Haven (Holmden Hill Haven)

- From astakatrin (https://www.flickr.com/photos/astakatrin/)

And without the white band too.

Hehehe I learned that when I first started visiting an English import sweets shop. The owner introduced me to sugar-free salt and pepper licorice, kind of like a weak version of Dutch salted licorice and absolutely delicious! He warned me against eating too many though and said he sells a lot to his elderly clientele for help with "problems"

If you want a cheap laugh, check out the sugar free gummy bears on Amazon. The reviews are hilarious!

I found out first-hand the hard way and I believe it was sugar-free Reeses. lol I ate one-too many and it does have a warning label on the back that says eating too many may have a laxative effect. lol

Oh my goodness what a pair of stunners!
Feeling extremely green with jealousy here!

My OH has put his foot down on the torti girly I've fallen in love with
He says 1 hammy is more than enough and as Jasp is becoming increasingly elderly that I should wait until he passes on until I can have another. Pooey

Hopefully another will come along or I'll be able to find a breeder with some nice coloured hams. I'd like something a bit different like a torti or a lilac or something but we'll see.

Oh my goodness they are gorgeous! I'm so jealous, I would love a little tortie... I'm cream-based at the moment though so torts wouldn't fit in my plans Maybe one day down the line, they are so beautiful!

In terms of genetics, you are correct that tort is sex-linked because its allele is only present on an X-chromosome, not on the Y. It's produced from the yellow gene, and a male hamster can only inherit one yellow gene, and so be either yellow or not-yellow. However a female has two opportunities to inherit the gene, if she gets both copies she will be yellow. However if she only gets one she will be a tort, resulting in yellow or yellow-derived patches amongst her underlying colour. Then if you mix in dom spot or banding as in this case, you get tort and white

aww they are stunning hamsters - I love torts to but they do earn the name of naughty torties so you will have hams with attitude there
There is a decent explanation here on torts:
Tortoiseshell and White
