Sand baths?
Well, I've finally got Jinx an Alaska - sooo worth it, oh my goodness it is massive. I finally have all the room to put all his accessories in, which is great, and I have more coming off zooplus, as I'm doing a natural theme for his cage with all the wooden accessories.
The only thing that's bothering me is that I can't find a decent sized hamster sand bath anywhere online and they don't even sell them at pets at home. I have the blue plastic trixie one at the moment, but it really is very shallow and small which is a shame cause jinx lives digging in it. Anyone have any links/suggestions to making or buying a good big sand bath that as a plus might go with the wooden/natural theme? Thanks in advance

Re: Sand baths?
I use a glass biscuit jar for a sand bath, and I think a couple of other people on here do too.
I'm not sure how big they do them but what about something like this: Exo Terra Natural Look Feeding Dish
Not sure how deep they are though.

Re: Sand baths?
You can get ceramic or glass oven baking dishes, they work great.
I just use rabbit ceramic food bowls.
But im doing a natural setup too so im getting a glass bowl and filling that with sand

Re: Sand baths?
Ah lovely! I like the exo terra but it is pretty shallow. The rabbit or glass bowl is a good idea! Thanks very much

Re: Sand baths?
Yeah the exo terra dishes are probably more suited to dwarfies. The jar that I use is this one Buy Tesco Value Glass Biscuit Jar from our Food Containers range - Tesco.com
I just push it down into the bedding a bit so that the hole is level and then put some sand in it. Works pretty well

Re: Sand baths?
I have a ceramic cat bowl for one of my Syrians! There are a lot of options for sand baths...I have even used leftover take-away tubs from family as sand baths, as long as they don't chew them of course!

I used those take away tubs for my 2 Syrians. One leaves hers alone and just pees in it. The other chewed it to shreds overnight! I then used a cardboard box until I could get hold of another jar and that got chewed too of course xD

Re: Sand baths?
I use the glass MIXTUR bowls from ikea, they are very durable glass and look superb in the cage especially if you have a natural setup. They are actually oven dishes but I think the Medium and Small sizes would be too small for an oven dish, but they are a great size for sand baths., they come in three sizes but the large one is too big, I use the medium oven dishes for my Syrian's and they adore it. With the amount of space in the alaska it would be fine! x
MIXTUR Oven/serving dish - 27x18 cm - IKEA <- Medium(27 x 18cm)
MIXTUR Oven/serving dish - IKEA <- Small (15 x 15cm)

Re: Sand baths?
I've come to prefer covered sand baths so I use glass cookie jars from IKEA and morrisons for a few pets The problem there is that the top would be visible so it wouldn't work so well with the natural theme (it would probably save sand though - with covered sand baths way less gets thrown out when the pet rolls in it)

Re: Sand baths?
I use chinese food take out trays. But I think I'm going to check out the cookie jars like Krill says. My dwarfies are just terrible about either tossing out the sand or covering it up with bedding. IKEA, here I come!
