Re: Petition to ban fluffy bedding
Thank you for posting this, it drove me nuts when I realised it had to be explained in 1000 characters. I wrote a whole page explaining the dangers in detail, what we've done so far, and safe alternatives!
Also, thank you to those that have signed, if you have any hamster groups, pages, websites or anything, spread the word of this. We need a whole 100,000 people to get it looked at!

Re: Petition to ban fluffy bedding
I am so glad I saw this. I think I bought this kind of stuff yesterday from Wilkos thinking it looked really comfortable!
When I got my hamster I asked at pets at home if they had the fluffy stuff and they said no. I wish they'd of told me it was dangerous for them.

I'm sure you have already, but if you haven't please remove it and give your hammies some ripped up plain unbleached/unscented toilet roll to keep him/her warm, you can carry on using this or use another bedding like the wilko's stuff that looks like shredded up blue & white multipurpose cleaning cloths,P@H safe bedding or recycled shredded paper you can buy from pet shops.
I have never seen fluffy bedding at Wilko's, if it is cotton wool like stuff thats the bad stuff if it is like shredded up multipurpose cloths which they do this is fine to use.

Re: Petition to ban fluffy bedding
Great, I can't wait to finally see this come off the shelf.
Mind you, it's not just the fault of the pet shops. It's the customers. The reason this stuff came out in the first place is for human aesthetics - we think it's cute and snuggly and imagine for ourselves how soft and warm it is. Plus it comes in different colours, how can we resist!
When I'm at work I really try to advise people against it, but sometimes they just won't have it to be. 'Their hamster has been using it for years', or 'It can't be dangerous or it wouldn't be on the shelf', or even WORSE - 'But it's so soft...'.
I hate it, and most of the time they'll only buy it anyway. It's only there because pet shops have been selling it for years, and if we took it off the shelf they would only go elsewhere to buy it. What can I do??
But we can try.

A lady I met had a dwarf hamster in a tiny cage (smaller than a Mini duna)with just the crappy Freplast wheel, food, tiny Ferplast house and water bottle. She thought it was a Chinese hamster and I told her that it was a Robo (big difference in the two types). She had bright pink fluffy bedding in the house (I am guilty i have used it in the past - not pink though, but i got rid of it and chucked it in the bin when I found out it was dangerous) I explained how dangerous it was and how hamsters have been known to chew their own limbs off to get away (she said er I can't get that image out of my head), I told her other things she could use, her reply but I won't be able to get pink , I like pink for her (can you believe it!). She still uses fluffy bedding now, there is no telling some people.
