we saw one today in the pet shop, my 7 and 9 yr old both wanted one as they just thought it was 'cute'...I replied that it may be cute, but wouldn't be nice for elmo and they said ok elmo comes first

yes I think a lot of these 'cute' things are aimed at children

I have to say I had a lead like in the first pic, for my first hamster, but I was a lot younger then. But I never pulled on the lead, just went where she went. Then she got out of it.
