A worrying start
After getting all the hamsters home I let them settle in for a bit. but yesterday I got them out and ended up spending a few hours chasing a robo, and another worrying about my syrian girl being under the washing machine.
the robo climbed onto my back and then under my bed, I had to move everything from under it and climb under to get to it, which was a lot harder than it sounds.
then my syrian (which I called alice btw). I let her run about my fitted kitchen which I was almost certian had no gaps in. but she mangaed to get under the washing machine, luckerly it wasn't on. but she came out from around the dish washer. I was very worried as I have no idea how to take the kitchen apart, which also made me think 'how on earth are people gooing to fix anything if it got broken'.
but they are all safe now, I just feel really bad about it all, espically after tammy has trusted me with them.

Re: A worrying start
It's not your fault ness. For a first, smaller hamsters are very very fast movers and can easily run away from you quite quickly and it's certainly not your fault that your little syrian girl is very clever and managed to find her way under the dishwasher even though you were certain that she wouldn't be able to. The main thing is, you got them back, they are all safe and sound and are not injured in any way at all at least they aren't lost for good.

Re: A worrying start
Sorry, I can't help but laugh, as this is almost identical to my first experiences of Robo ownership.
Whilst we were attempting to tame Dave, we tried to be cautious and keep Dave within her cage. It didn't last long.
Dave shot up Alex's arm, paused for breath on her back, and was then away across the flat. It took over three hours to corner her, including building the "Great Wall of Dave" - using our entire DVD collection to string a wall across the flat, so we could contain her in one place... gradually making it smaller, and smaller, until we had her!
It was a real pain in the bum, make no mistakes!
All's well that ends well, and I think you've learnt a lot about Robos. No easy answers sadly, and they do tame nicely... they just take a lot longer, and will confound you along the way - but it's all worth it in the end

Re: A worrying start
I'm got loads of robos, lol. it's the first time its been this hard to find one, all my others seem to be very tame but I understand the new ones will take time lol.
it was the syrian that was my first ever syrain.
though both times I was very frightened that they were gone for ever, I over reacted really. it was really fine in the end, well I still shouldn't have been so careless in the first place.

Re: A worrying start
lol I would NEVER EVER let my robos out, of course they come out but I would never let them out without the ball or the play pen
I would get bored of trying to catch them and would just have to wait for them to come back instead!
All my syrians now free range but the shed is "secure" the floor is laminated and there are no escape holes - I do worry but it's more important to me that they actually get out for a bit of excersise, again I probably wouldn't bother trying to catch them, they (more often than not) usually find their own way back to their cages sooner or later - their tummies are like little homing devices
And none of them would stand a chance free running round the house, we have 4 very naughty cats I would go bonkers if I "lost" a hammie in here

Re: A worrying start
There so fast, I have a few robos i know i can carry and trust but others are so wriggly theres no way i could do it without a playpen
Its a horrible feeling when a robo escapes, my old boy ilpulatsu escaped and we pulled the room apart searching for him - when we were looking for him he wedged himself under the cubord door and i freaked out cause i thought he was crushed
the next time my brother (stole the key) and got into my room - knocking of my cages and ilpulatsu's son Super dude escaped - this time he was missing for hours then i tried putting his cage onto the floor and he came running up to see his daddy. His leg was all torn up and although he got better ilpulatsu never accepted him back.
Its so stressfull when a animal gets out - especcially with 4 cats, i cant imagine what id do if they got hold of one of the hamsters

Re: A worrying start
I think chasing escaped hamsters around is all part of the fun of hamster ownership, isn't it? I had a heart attack the first time it happened but now I'm pretty blase about hams wriggling away or leaping off the sofa and escaping from balls....I usually average one a week although last night it was three...I'm pretty adept a grabbing free-ranging robos now. I like to think of myself as a professional robo juggler. As long as I get them back within a few minutes, I'm fine. The only time it ever took longer was last month when my WW Poppy's cage somehow fell on the floor during the night and it took me 2 hours from discovering it to find her. Then I was almost in tears - and took the day off work to look for her!

Re: A worrying start
Sammy once managed to undo his cage door whilst I was downstairs. I went back up half-way through the program I was watching to check on him and he had jumped out of his cage. I was about to panick and was ready to shout for help when I felt something at my feet. He was sitting on my foot!!! Later I found out (thanks to some poo's) that he had gone all around the room and had had a snack under my desk
