thats awful, i hope he dosent get a hamster from anywhere!

Noodles - I mod for durham freecycle and we do not allow animals - but some groups do, i think its a terrible shame that animals are allowed to be asked for and posted on a item recycleing forum - freecycles aim is to save good items from a landfill.

If no ones tried already (and supposing your group has a cafe) you could make a post on the cafe and try to get the members to all ask the admin to disallow animals on the board.

Ive seen posts such as 'wanted kitten must be fluffy and grey!!!!'

MollDoll - I think that all the Freecycle groups that I'm in allow animals(It sucks being skint!). The ones in the NW put warnings at the end of each post but the Oxfordshire ones don't bother(I think it's quite lax generally as there is no limit on wanted etc).

There are often replies saying EXACTLY what you've said - one person said that they had never seen a jack russell on a landfill for instance!! A lot of people do complain and some people have even said they are going to boycott until it's stopped but the moderators don't do anything.

While I don't think asking for animals should be allowed, I hesitate to make an issue out of offering them because I'm concerned that people will just release them/dump them/kill them. I guess this is quite cynical of me but I was looking at Rabbit Rehome the other day and they had so many bunnies that were described as "dumped" - I would rather someone took them than that, if you know what I mean, as at least they have a chance.

Not sure if our freecycle allows animals I don't understand freecycle and how to get an account anyway otherwside I would watch out for animals in mine. All our animals get the best possible vet care yes it may cost the earth but we do it. Our collie needed another nearly £1000 operation and the insurance would not payout asit was a repeat operation for the same thing so we paid out for it yes it was hard going but it needed to be done. We don't let our animals suffer they have the best food, care, cages etc that we can have. It is important to provide for your animals.

Luckily the people that I know who think like this are sensible enough not to get an animal in the first place.
Ditto, I sat on my rabbit (which is aparently common as bunnies have a habbit of following you around, even if you're about to sit down...) and everyone thought I was mad to spend roughly £400 getting him fixed. Everyone who has met my rabbit has realised why I had done it though. To me, money is very tight but I will spend what ever I need to to ensure my animals safety.

I get the same about my rats, and for the most part we aren't even talking massive bills, just twenty odd quid to sort out respiratory problems every now and then. Why don't I just get another rat, it'd be cheaper

A few years ago my mum was volunteering for Cat's Protection and did some fostering and handled enquiries about rehoming. The amount of idiots ringing up! 'I want a white kitten. Yeah it has to be white. It's for my little daughter's birthday', and the killer, 'I'm looking for a kitten. No, I don't want an adult, I don't like cats, just kittens' *head desk*

and then as soon as it grows up they'll do what with it? leave it to die, drown it, bring it back to a shelter?

Exactly, I dread to think. Needless to say she didn't get a kitten from CP, but no doubt she went to a petshop or got one off Freeads or something
