I tried the one-handed grab with Woody today and he bit me. I was really worried that I'd scarerd the little boy as he's such a sweetie normally...so I left him for a few mins and then came back and reverted to the double scoop so I could give him lots of cuddles to make sure he know's he's okay and very much loved.

It seems to be by day for being bitten. My WW girl Poppy (she of the 2 hour disappearance who came back when she heard my voice) bit me too...during a one-handed grab (which is standard with her).

I'm not blaming any of it on the one-handed grabs at all - I think I must have just been a bit careless or blase or something today. Or I smelled of pecan nut & maple fudge that I was eating earlier...oops! Feeling a bit sorry for myself now - I'm a slummy mummy.

My "jumpy" ones are Brioche who came from a breeder and Donut who I got at a pet shop. Brioche has been here longer and is now getting on fine, Donut is still leaping all over the place.

As for the "bigger" syrians (including the new SBP) they all come out of their cages on their own, I only had to tease SBP along the ramp once and she's away

They know once they get themselves out they get to run round senceless for a couple of hours - speaking of which it's time to put Chunky away to let SBP out, she's been jumping at the sides of her cage for about 15mins now as she usually comes out at 9pm, she's a VERY fast learner and (still) a real credit to you Basia x

OH the shame and he is used to it... I guess he is just used to you spoiling him with scoops and thats what he prefers?

Tell Woody that I will send his Mum round to spank his little cream butt if he does that again

I think it was me just being rubbish....he was a good boy afterwards. Its going to take him a little while to get used to me. He's been the quickest to adapt out of my "Blenheim Three" - although that makes it sound like living with me is life without parole! My Towy silver grey girl has finally settled down with me today, and my Tristar sable roan "flyer" is still flying!

It was my first ever bite from a Syrian so Woody's made history. And it didn't hurt anywhere near as much as Poppy's bite!

Default Re: new adittoins do you find the same thing ?

I almost always find any new hamster I get is fast and jumpy when I get them - I always tell people taking mine to expect that for a short while - even if they've been handling them no problem at my house before they take them home. For an animal that relies so heavily on their sense of sense of smell, leaving their litter mates and going to a new home with new people who smell totally different to what they are used to, it isn't surprising. It must be terrifying and always makes me feel a bit for little guys leaving me as they have no idea what to expect.

I'd always go back a stage or two when handling any new hamster and take things at the hamster's pace - occasioanally Will forgets this and tries to treat them exactly like our old guard - and he's had a bite or two to remind him!
