Do hams really like balls?
Do you think your hamster really likes it's ball? I mean, they don't really go anywhere, they just run in circles and are shut in an enclosed space where they can't sniff or investigate anywhere or climb. I have come to the conclusion that balls are really more for our enjoyment, rather than the hamsters'!
Let me know what you think.

Yes! I think my hamster does enjoy his ball! When he's hyper and very wide awake he will stay in it for hours, he also likes to follow us around the house! He seems to luv the upstairs, it's not as boring as downstairs! Plus it also gives them exercise if they dont have a wheel or doesn't like their wheel, it gives them exercise and keeps them from being bored and getting fat!

Absolutely! At least in most cases I would think, theres always the exception!
Nibbles refuses to come OUT of his ball when he's in it, I'll open it up and try to encourage him to come out but he'll just turn the opposite direction and press as hard as he can to go the other way and roll! He seems to remember his way around the house because when I put him down it doesn't take him long for him to work his way into our bathroom at the other end of the house! (I leave all the doors open for him!). He can see the furniture (I have a clear ball, I think they're better so they can see out more) and he works his way around the furniture, around the door frames, from one room to another!
He loves it.

I really can't comment on if they LIKE the balls, but my personal feelings towards them are not nice.
I think they are cruel. Why are we taking our animals OUT of the cage to begin with if we are only putting them into another enclosure? Isn't the point of OUT so they can explore?
I do have balls for mine, but after watching them bash into so many things, and getting the balls trapped in corners, and when they find something they want to sniff or give a 'hands on' to and obsess with the item for some time, I cam to the conclusion that out in the open is best. So I made their room hamster safe by running wire all around the door bottoms and walls where they may feel tempted to chew. I will unplug anything that is plugged in when I let them out to make sure no one eats wires. They seem to enjoy this more and if I need to leave the room for a moment, I know they are safe for a short time.

Balls
I have some who use balls some who don't - personally I prefer not to use them I like to see them explore the spare bed and the corners of the room. Playing with the Puzzle playground and climbing my huge teddy bear (over 4 feet tall) but then I know not everyone has the luxury of a hamster specific room and I would rather they use a ball and give their hamster some out time than live in a cage 24/7. There is an article on zoomer balls which you all may find interesting at Hamster Central - especially as it was written by me

balls / rooms
I do believe there is no substitute for running freely around a room, absolutely, and I let nibbles do the same thing with a lot of supervision! But I think the balls are great for some inbetween time. Of course they also need to be supervised even when in a ball.
Each hamster is going to be different. When I can leave the lid off of my ball and he still won't come out ..... he can't dislike it that much!

I think some do, some don't. I've had some that would be zooming off in them whenever they could, some that would get bored very quickly.
I think they're inferior to playtime in a ham-proof room or play pen but they have their place if used correctly.

Clover & Cori love theirs - they climb right in when it is put up to their homes, but Tyr couldn't care less. He gets time in the playpen.

my 3 certainly love theirs, they will literally run around at cups, plates, anything they can knock down with enough momentum. Truely fascinating!
