Hungry hamster!
I've been worried about my 1 year old male syrian hamster for about a week now, I clean his tank out twice a week and put lots of fresh sawdust and bedding in for him, but the last few times he seems to be eating his bedding (and he ALWAYS has a bowl of fresh food that is re-filled daily) and I was just wondering if this was normal? Thankyou.

Re: Hungry hamster!
No, his cheek pouches are empty and his bed just has stored food in it (becuause he ate all the his bedding) :/ should I be worried or is this normal hammy behaviour??

Re: Hungry hamster!
Change his bedding. What type of bedding is it he's eating?
Anyway, change it and see if that helps, it probably will.
Im not sure why he would eat it, perhaps it just tastes nice??
Also, sawdust or woodshavings? You may have meant woodshavings, but sawdust is unsuitable as its so..well, dusty!

Re: Hungry hamster!
Maybe he's just moving it around? They do tend to rearrange their homes quite a bit
I too would try a bedding change...
Carefresh, Megazorb, Hemp, and Finacard are good

Re: Hungry hamster!
Are you sure he's eating it and not just trampling it down/laying in it to flatten in so it looks like there is less in there?
When I fill Dexter's penthouse up with bedding he lays on top of it so he squashes it down and it looks like I've hardly put any in after a few days!

Re: Hungry hamster!
I'd change the bedding but first check that, like the others have said, that he is eating and not squishing it x

Re: Hungry hamster!
Yes, he has wood shavings, and I will try changing his bedding, the one he has now is basically just like shredded toilet paper, it is from our local pet shop though and states on the packet that it is for all small animals?

hi , I think you should try mixing 2 different types of foods to make your hamster intrested in his food. Try to place the hide the food in diffrerent places in the cage but still have some in his bowl good luck
