Diatomaceous Earth for Hamsters? To control mites?
Just wondered if any of you guys have heard of doing this, as a few of the breeders that my old store worked with swore by it for their hamsters. I've read the label and there are no chemicals in it, I was just wondering if it was necessary?
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth For Small Pets - PureEarthD
thanks : )

I've either heard of it or of something similar to it. My Mum used it for her chickens and mentioned that its supposedly small pet safe too if we ever face mites again.
I'd only use it on a vets advice after confirming the presence of mites though - and once mites are confirmed its probably easier to use chemicals.
Definetly not needed without mites being present though.

Ok thank you, I just wanted to make sure that it was safe in the first place as an option in case anything ever happens C:

I can't be sure so would ask a vet first. All I know about it is that either it or something similar is fine for chickens lol

I would not use home treatments in case of mites. Go to the vet, get a spot-on in the dilution used for kittens and puppies and treat your hamster for real instead of playing around. Metering out the correct dose is a bit tricky but I've done it myself successfully for my dwarfs. You just use a 1ml syringe (without needle) to measure out the 0.05ml you need.

Yeah, I am not using it (sorry for the late reply, I didn't see that anyone had written further), and Boo has no signs of mites, it was just something that has been brought up and I was curious about thanks guys

Re: Diatomaceous Earth for Hamsters? To control mites?
I did a piece of research this year about intestinal parasites in chickens for my degree & found that some people use diatomaceous earth to control parasites in their chickens (worms etc) but I couldn't find anything that actually showed whether it worked or how it supposedly worked.
So from a personal point of view I would be more inclined to rely on vet-approved methods which have some scientific basis to them but I know that lots of other people do use other methods. I would say that if you try a non-vet type of control & it isn't working, be prepared to consult a vet fairly soon rather than risk any problem getting worse.

Hi Shiny, thanks for the input : ) Boo has no signs of mites at all, it was more just out of personal curiosity, I am much to paranoid with my pets to not consult a vet lol it was just something I didn't know what the fuss was about, so I figured I would ask

Oh I can explain the theory behind its use for chickens. Doesn't change that we have no idea if its safe for hamsters or not though lol

Re: Diatomaceous Earth for Hamsters? To control mites?
Yes, You can put a little (I would do about half a tsp for a large water bottle) in the water or sprinkle some on top of their food for internal parasites. I use this for my Dwarf hamster. You can put a little more in for Syrians or a little less for Robos (about half a tsp more or less). I would let them have access to the treated water for about 3 days then just replace it will clean water for another 3 days then give it back to them for 3 days. This should be a full cleansing for a hamster. You can repeat this about every year or so. Probably dont do this for baby hamsters : ).
You can rub a little on their body for external mites ect.
