Aspen is wonderful, I got a huge thing of it at Petco for around $23 and its lasted me nearly two months and is almost halfway empty.

Pine is bad, aspen is fine. Wal Mart has a brand that's pretty cheap. About $3 at most branches. One of the only things I'll buy from Wal Mart. I don't like PetSmart's aspen... cheap, but dusty. (And I don't have a PetCo nearby) Critter Care is a cheap off brand of Carefresh. Made by the exact same company, but at a fraction of the price. If you can find it around, I think it's safe to use. Aspen would probably be your cheapest and safest bet. Newspaper, I'd worry about the ink. Tissue (toilet paper and paper towels, too) are great for nesting... not so much for bedding as hamsters like to dig around in their bedding.

Kiln dried pine is fine. Pine that isn't kiln dried isn't, but most is. *Facepalm* That really irritates me when people say that. >.<

No, although if you want to try out making your own "carefresh" here is a nice video. I'm not sure it works? and it seems like some work, but it might be worth it to you. Anyway newspaper is too inky and tissue will not absorb well at all. What I do is buy aspen bedding and carefresh. Mix them together, with more carefresh on the top. It cuts down on my expense because aspen is rather cheep and takes up most of the cage, but the comfort and softness of carefresh is still present for my hammie. I also add some sheets of ripped up paper towel for added softness, though this also shouldn't be used as a primary bedding, but as an addition of comfort.

I've been able toget big bulk bags of aspen for $10-15 in some stores. Aspen is great. It's
pine and especially cedar you want to stay away from.

Nu Nu Nu Nuuuu. Pine is wonderful and lovely is most cases. I don't use it for hams in most cases but I did at one point and it was perfect for the robos. I do use it for the chins and most chin owners do.
