Five weeks old is the minimum recommended by the NHC and four weeks old is the perfect time to separate from mum and into single sex cages to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Only you can decide which hamster you prefer - you need to be happy that whichever hamster is healthy tame and from a reputable source. Whatever age, they will still need 24 hours to settle into their new cage before you start handling. It would help if the breeder can give you some of the hamster's familiar substrate from its cage to help it settle.

My hammy Popcorn was around 7 weeks when I got him from the pet shop. He was older since he only had 1 eye and he's settled fine. He's actually been tamer than all my other hams when they first came home.

My new boy Arthur was exactly five weeks old when I picked him up from the breeder. He is the youngest I have ever had as my others have been from The big well known pet store and I believe they are usually a bit older.
