i have some questions .. does any one know ??
can hamsters see?
i always wonder if minky can see me as when i talk to him he knows exactly were i am and comes to see me or do they have superb hearing?
also
whats the noise hamsters are making?
as when i hold him he sometimes makes this sweet noise, that not a squeal sort of sound like if there in pain or distress, but just a little noise, its hard to explain but it sounds sweet, it seems like hes talking to me, he doesnt do it all the time only occasionally,
also
do hamsters have feelings, like do they feel love?
so like humans we love people or we like people, or we dislike people or things, do hamsters feel things like that, like oh i love you, or oh i like that,
or is that me just being stupid lol
im just interested to know more and more about them i dunno i just love them probably too much lol

Re: i have some questions .. does any one know ??
1. hamsters can definitely see! have you ever noticed that, if you make a sudden movement in front of their cage, they stop doing what they're doing? although I don't think their sight is as good as their other senses, smell and hearing. I assume that's because they're crepuscular?
2. is it like a chittering? one of mine does it whenever he's investigating and I think it's really cute my other ham never really makes a noise. I'm glad I've never heard one screeching, I know some owners of new hams have experienced it and it sounds terrifying!
3. I'm not sure if they can feel "love", per se. that would be personifying them really. personally I think that they are capable of feelings such as contentment, irritation (have you ever woken your ham up? haha), hunger, boredom, curiosity, and discomfort (if ill, or not held properly). "love" is such a complex emotion that some people don't even know what it is! so I don't think a hamster can "love" its owner, rather, they come to understand that you are their caregiver and trust us.

Dusty is very vocal. He walks round his cage tutting. He loves to hoard. He'll take a whole packet of nuts. He just stores them. I take them back a bit at a time and he does it all over again. If you aren't quick enough giving him a nut he squeaks to make you hurry up.
Popcorn who's still very skitterish screams blue murder if you pick him up. He's every territorial.
I don't know if its love maybe contentment. I do know when they snuggle into your neck to go to sleep it feels like love.

Hamsters can see to about 13-20cm in front of them and can obviously make out forms from a greater distance but can't focus on them. They have absolutely great hearing and will follow you because of your voice more than the sight of you.

Re: i have some questions .. does any one know ??
My hams make several noises, which seem to mean different things. Tutting when they're cross, clicking which seems to be happy, cheeping for excitement, and of course squeaking which is when they are frightened so I have only ever heard at the vet, and from Lola at her show visit.
As for love, I think in terms of relating to me what I see as love is secuity, comfort and safety. For example, if they have to go to the vet, or they've been to a show and didn't like it, when I pick them up I get lots of clicking and snuggling into me they they'll stay there till they feel happy and safe again. I also get this when they've got stuck down the sofa cushions and I dig them out!
In terms of love toward each other, I like to think The Cloud loved Bianca as he was completely obsessed with doing everything for her, and that no one could go near her, more likely it was other things on his mind! He was was more possessive over her than Whizzbit was with Lilly, or Dasher with Daisy, but he was a more extreme personality.
I also feel that Rolo loved Whizzbit, but again in was my human interpretation of love, and move that Whizzbit made Rolo who is a very shy ham by nature feel safe and secure, and able to cope with leaving his mum and litter mates.

Hadley made that noise last night when I was doing some hand taming with her and she was exploring the cardboard box I had on my lap. It was very similar to a chuttering noise and it did seem little bit like a dove. It sounded like it was coming from her throat, almost like a hum

Holly was doing something like that the other day, he usually is very quiet but he was making a kind of very soft huh, huh, huh noise to himself, I think the description higher up the thread of "tutting" describes it very well, though he wasn't upset, he was contentedly exploring on the sofa.
