Default Escapes!

Since I've got home to Northern Ireland for the summer, I've had three escapes. Before I came here, I'd never had any.

First, I forgot to put the lid on Jack's cage and went back to the kitchen to my computer. It must have been about an hour later and I went to check on the hams. Jack was gone as he had managed to climb out. We couldn't find him for a while but he was under the sofa in the living room and was easily lured out by yoghurt drops. nom.

We have also been letting Jack run around the kitchen freely in the evenings. There are myself and my grandparents watching him when he does this, so it's usually okay and we (thought) we knew where all the little nooks he could escape to where. The dishwasher was slightly open, and he climbed up inside. I tried to grab him but he wouldn't come back down! When we opened the dishwasher (it was off, by the way) he wasn't inside, so we figured it must actually have been a hole that let him under the cupboards! My poor granda, he had to drill apart the bottom of the cupboards to find Jack. When Jack saw us, he came straight over, though. I think when he actually got the freedom he was scared and wanted to come back!

Needless to say, Jack now has a playpen :P

The last escape was this morning. I woke up and heard a little scuffle. I thought it was just the hams in their beds.. but I heard it again and realised it was behind my wardrobe. Then again, under my bed. I leapt up wondering if Jack could possibly have gotten his lid off in the night, but he was sound asleep in bed. Then, from the corner of my eye I noticed Eve running as fast as her little robo legs could carry her across the floor toward the bedroom door. I literally dived down to catch her, lol. No idea how she got out! Her cage lid was on and in tact. And I didn't think she could get through the bars.

She would have been easy to find though, she left a very clear trail of poop and seeds all the way under the bed and behind the wardrobe, then out again. She must have been dropping things in her excitement at her new found freedom. Haha.

Sorry for the long post! But doesn't anyone else have any escape attempt stories? You probably all think I'm really careless now but I honestly think this is all a stroke of bad luck. And I think the stories are quite funny. Especially Eve's, haha.

Awww I can imagine little Eve like a rocket across the floor
Glad you caught her, you tend to gain ninja reflexes once you own hamsters

I had a good few syrian escapes. My old ham Porridge always used to come back to me if i accidently left his door open, but the once he got into my robos cage (thankfully she had the sense to run to the opposite side of the cage).
My worst escape was Batman getting under the floorboards in the bathroom, it was about 24 hours before I managed to get him back (taking apart the bath and using baby food to lure him out)

So glad you found them and they are ok but seriously the way you tell it is Soo funny... You should think of doing a hammy escapade blog! I have images of soggy dishwashered hammy trying to break back into its own cage and then a robo running like the clappers haha. But Soo glad you got them back!!
there is a video on Utube that shows a robo getting out through the cage bars where the door is! On most cages if you look the gap between the bars where the door closes is larger then the normal bars!! As we all know hamsters are determined escapologists (my cinnamon and my angel hammie Tillifer can/could both open normal cage doors)!!!!
Again really happy you got them back and thanks for the smile too.

Any pics of your babies?

One of my syrians maya escaped out of her cage 2 nights in a row. We put her into a new cage and she escaped at 3 in morning some how climbed up onto the bed and woke my OH up he was not happy and moaned about it to me in the morning. Then she did it again the following night ran across my arm waking me up i turned the light on and there she was sat in the middle of the bed looking up at me haha bless. But i was worried that if she did it again we might roll over and crush her so she got moved back into the old cage. And my other one carmine can't be put into exercise balls he has escaped out of every single one

Hi Templar, with Tilly I used very small padlocks on the doors! It was literally the only way I could stop her opening the doors!! And my new girlie cinnamon, me and my oh we're watching tv and he suddenly sat up and said "why is she in the middle of the rug" I turn to see a meerkatting Cinnamon with the "who me"!!! Look on her face.. She got the padlocks too and in the end I put them in zoozones (no doors).
You would think they wouldn't try to escape considering how good they have it
Gald you got them back!

For both of my hammmies i had to put padlocks on the doors, as they both learnt ot literally shake the door open.
Gem would run into a corner and try her hardest to rip the carpet up, or would go down a little crook in the kitchen that led to the bathroom, so i was up at 5am one morning calling "Gem, Geeeem" in the bathroom for ages

Olive decided to go behind the washing machine, deposit an enormous amount of food there and then proceed to chew on the bloody washing machine's wire! The only problem was that she had stripped it down to the wire (and there wsn't much plastic on the floor) and then destroyed some of the wire, whilst the machine was on ! She was ok for about a month, but we think she swallowed some of the plastic and/or wire and started struggling to pass poo, and passed away a month later.
