I'm so glad you got him, Mollz, he'll have a lovely life now!
The thing is that we are all different - most of us set limits and some of us stick to them, some of us don't. My "limits" continually seem to go up but that's becasue I find Will and I can handle caring for more hamsters than I originally thought we could - there are two of us and we are both happy spending our evenings playing with hamsters rather than watching Eastenders or simillar rubbish.
I think sometimes you just know that a little one is for you anyway. I also think you *know* if you can accommodate the extra time, money and space needed to take on an individual hamster. There's also (something I don't really like thinking about given that we have five old men living here now) the fact that taking on any hamster or rescue, though a decision to be thought through first, isn't exactly a long term committment like taking on a dog or cat or having a baby would be - their little lives are so short to us, if we can take even one and make a life better, then that has to be good. Whilst they don't have years and years with us they do have a major impact on our lives, bless them.
True we, as a group, can't take them all - but I'm so glad Mollz saw this little chap

Also things constantly change. My dad will say something along the lines of "you have too many now :P" and then a couple of months down the line after new additions, the oldies start to go downhill and pass away
So it's a constant cycle. True, you can't take them all in, but you can give it a go!

Thats great that you got him Mollz!
I know we all say the same when we walk into a pet shop and see a gorgeous little hamster either perfectly healthy or in a bad way/condition and your heart goes out to them.
As most have said, it depends on your own circumstances, i.e have you space, time to spend with them, money etc etc. If you know deep in your heart that you can do this then i say go for it. I always feel for hamsters when i go in and always think, oh i could take you home with me but i just know that i dont have the space right now in my house for anymore.
OH and me had went in to Acorn in Hamilton yesterday and saw some gorgeous little ones, i said to my partner, 'oh you could have your own hamster'. Then realistically thinking about it thought its not possible.
We all know he will have the best care with you and will be well looked after.

The reason I asked, was because this is something which is very much at the centre of my thoughts - as I'm considering whether I can, feasibly, take Hobbs' sister on.
I went into this whole thing without having set limits, and now have 6 - a figure which, if you'd suggested it 12 months ago, I would have laughed at!
I think it's great that you've chosen to take Uno, and I can see his appeal - I just through the question out, because I'd be very interested to know, as a fellow-owner and someone wondering the same.

I'm sure we all know in our hearts whether we have the time/space/facilities for another and I know that I have really good self restraint, even if I am dying to have something. So that fact that little Uno played on my mind and was all I coudl think about for the next 4 hours proves to me that he was meant to be with me. Since getting Uno I have been talking to my mum and we have come to the conclusion that we would like to have at least 1 rescue at any one time, possibly getting another in a few months. If someone asked me to pick up another rescue next week, then I am sure that I would go through the desperate deliberation that I did before I go Uno, and the same with another pet-shop unfortunate.
When I read your first message on this issue, I thought you were having a go at me - so that's why I didn't really reply as I couldn't see what you were getting at! But I suppose I do understand what you mean - however it doesn't apply to me.
If you have everything required to take in Hobbs' sister, and it wont interfere with any plans of yours, then in my view - why not? Although the decision is obviously yours to make!

Oh no, not at all! I was just curious as to how the whole decision-process works for you - and, in kicking off the debate, how it would work for others. I have a lot of professional curiosity around understanding how people make decisions, and it got the better of me here.
Yes I would like to take in Hobbs' sister, but then we're back to my original question - where do you draw the line?
Rhetorical question, in this instance - please don't feel that you have to answer it again
As I said at the start, I think you'd already made your decision - and were looking for us to back you; and I do, wholeheartedly. I certainly wasn't looking to jeopardise Uno's chances by throwing in last-minute spanner! I think it was well-considered and reasoned decision - and the same has applied for answering my initial meanderings - and I'm very happy with that, as if you were looking for my justification
And, please, don't ever think I would be so rude as to have a go - people may not always agree, but I think we can remain common in our respect and courtesy; and I have both in spades for yourself
