Default First Syrian

Just got my first Syrian, Jack. He's a cutie pie. I bought him from P@H (which I'm sure many of you will disapprove) when I was in buying bedding last week. my OH wasn't willing to let me get another hamster (though I've been begging for ages) because he thinks my two robo girls are enough... Well he fell in love with Jack in the shop too so agreed

I know he needs a lot of space so at the moment I'm in the middle of building him a bin cage to live in. I already had the bin (hence, my argument to the OH "But I already have the space for him, I'll just move the hamster supplies out of the bin and move him in!") & it only cost a few quid from Home Bargains before Christmas. So there's a hole cut in the top of the bin and I'm waiting on getting mesh from Wickes tomorrow. He's really trying to test my patience tonight though! His temporary cage until he moves into the bin is a bit on the small side and I'm certain he's bored. He's got toys, a wheel and plenty of toilet roll tubes, as well as tunnels (which he doesn't seem to like) but he's been climbing up the cage, biting bars and has already destroyed one water bottle! He's quite the character!

In the limited time I've had with him so far he's really kept me company. My robos are entertaining but they're nothing compared to this guy! He's so vocal, he shouts when he gets woken up (and he's a really light sleeper!) and he makes a soft purring noise when he's having fun. He also snores a little, haha! He's really adventurous and I found him on top of his wheel earlier. He saw me, froze in shock and fell off. He was fine though - just tried to climb back up again :P

I'm still a beginner when it comes to hamsters, but he is a creamy colour with a thick white stripe up his belly and slightly white legs. I bet there's a more technical term for it.

Sorry for the long post. I was going to post a picture as well but none of them were any good/unblurry. I need a new camera and a hammy that sits still. :P

Congrats to you

Make sure you post many pictures for us.

Also, yes. It is very important to make sure that he settles in well. It also makes them easier to tame later on when you try since they are settled in. Also if they are bothered too much, then it causes them stress which can cause them to get wet tail.

Best of luck! What color is your buddy?

Moonie, he's a creamy colour with white belly and legs.

He seemed to settle quite well. It just seems to be this evening that he's really restless and seems to want to escape. He's had a lot of ball time to let him know that he is allowed out and that he's not stuck in cages forever. :P

I've been able to give him a few cuddles. He's not scared of my hand anymore. I was lucky in that before I got him the OH forced me to try holding him in the shop and I knew he'd be easily tamed because he was completely fine with me lifting him then. He settled for a few days and I began trying to stroke him and give him treats. We've made a lot of progress in a week! <3

edit: SammytheSyrian: yes, short haired, probably should have mentioned that (:
