Mischief is my new syrian hamster I have been eager to pick her up. I have been looking on the Internet how to tame her so far around your next step you are not in charge it's the hamster. If they don't want to be picked up they'll bite. And it tends to go by breed if he are like Mischief then they will bite but training them to know a certain sound to be related to bad or good is the best way to go when it comes to biting. I use a clicking noise for good and a squeak for bad all though she is quite timid. That's really all i know.

Have you tried just putting your hand on the ground near her and seeing if she comes to you? She needs to be comfortable coming to you first =)
The first few times she comes to you just let her climb on your hand then gradually start to lift your hand up when she climbs on it until you are both comfortable for her to run through your hands. Then I would try to pick her up.

Er... Chloe, breed doesn't affect how likely they are to bite.
I've been bitten by a mostly-tame syrian, bitten by an untame hybrid, and nibbled by a nervous roborovski. When we get a chinese one day in the future I'll probably end up bitten or nibbled by that too with my luck lol
We also don't go for noises as good or bad. We go for "biting doesn't get you anything" which yes can hurt but teaches the ham to stop as it gains nothing from the biting.

The only time you shouldn't pick up your hamster is when he/she was sleeping and u wake him/her up. Almost sure thing that you will get bitten.

It does matter if you think syrain are quite territorial animals others are not so much and prefer a friend to live with.

I wouldn't say it goes by species, as I have seen such opposite behaviour form hamsters of the same species. Bailey doesn't mind if I pick her up while she's asleep or eating. But my aunts hamster would bite even at the best of times.

The "others" are different species, not breed And it doesn't actually make a difference, it all depends on the hamster. Any hamster can get territorial about its cage, it's not just Syrians. Pompompoms had a Roborovski that, by all accounts, was a right bugger

Also... why are you moving the cage up and down the stairs?? Hamsters are usually more active at night, but it depends on the hamster a bit, mine is often out at about ten in the morning as well

When mine was little I tried sitting in a safe area with her (in this case a home made run) and let her explore. The second day I had her I just cornered her and cupped my hands gently under her, she sprang straight out but I did this 3 or 4 more times over about an hour session. I did this each day trying to build up the time and lift her gently up a little more each time. Within 10 days she was quite comfortable with me. I was very scared of being bitten and started off with gardening gloves but they seemed to scare her even more. In the end it comes down to trust, you're trusting them not to bite you but they have to trust that you aren't going to scoop them up and eat them. Makes you realise who it's more scary for really. Good luck, I'm sure you'll soon be the best of friends.
