I've said it a million times before - I don't think hamsters should be sold like supermarket products. They aren't a packet of crisps and shouldn't be sold in the same way.

I do wish that these pet stores would either train their staff properly or not give advice to new owners at all though - you don't go to a supermarket looking for dietary advice so if you plan on getting a pet like you would a packet of crisps, don't get advice about your new pet from the floor staff. 9/10 they aren't going to have a clue what they are talking about.

In a local "mom and pop" pet store, the employee who showed me their hamsters made it painfully obvious they thought hamsters were disgusting. They said they make bad pets because they bite - anything that isn't properly socialized or bred from aggressive stock is going to be skittish and bite!

There was a 10 gallon aquarium full of Golden hamsters, one with tiny, tiny pink pups in the corner. The employee said the babies would "be fine." The store had a Satin male. When I picked him completely freaked out! The employee didn't understand why I didn't want him. She said "Satin is rare, why don't you want him?"

I was really sad after going to this pet shop.
