HELP! We have an escapee on the loose!!
Got back from picking up my son from nursery and was stood in the living room when out of the corner of my eye I saw Captain Barnacles disappear under the settee. We have looked under there for him and couldn't see him. I heard him nibbling and followed the sound, moved everything from that area to find nothing. And now he's gone quiet. We've put out a cardboard box with a doorway and hamster food round it and inside and hoping he will go there. We are keeping doors shut and just generally watching out for him. We don't know how long he has been out and I am worried about him. Is there any sure way we can find him?

You're right to keep the door firmly shut so as to contain him to the one room, put out anything that would be most tempting to him, and look in places you'd never think he's get into. You can put flour down too if you're not able to stay in the room to check whether he's been out of not. If there are any gaps to be squuezed into cover them up, and just keep being really quiet and listening. He might have settled down for a snooze, but he will be up and about again. I really hope he reveals himself soon, keep us updated.

Do you have anyone with a lady hamster you can borrow? If he is a male they always come out a courting when the smell a lady.
Put their own open cage on the floor as they often come back to the cage and also set up a bucket trap.

Souffles suggestion is a good one, a female hamster in a ball might attract a male, one of my hamsters escaped under the floor for 24 hours, as soon as he sniffed his sister he popped out!

I hope you find him soon. Have you left him water as well? I absolutely love his name.

try his wheel on the floor if he is a wheel obsessed ham, if its got a stand maybe put the flour around the wheel so you can see if he went in it or not.
hope you find him soon!

Re: HELP! We have an escapee on the loose!!
Small animals like familiarity, so try placing things from his cage on the floor, especially along the skirting boards, as small animals tend to cling to walls. He will smell these and hopefully come out from hiding. Whatever you do, don`t move any heavy furniture incase he is underneath. It could badly injure him, so it`s best to monitor the room and block all open channels, including fireplaces!
