Re: What to teach 4-H kids about hamsters
What age range is the 4-H club?
I would start with the basics like feeding, cleaning, handling etc. The national hamster council website has some care sheets.
Maybe you could do a contest to do the best designed hamster cage (as in safest and most enjoyable) x

That contest is a great idea - if you look in the housing section, you'll be able to get a good idea of what a hamster needs

I'm intrigued! I have to do a presentation on a pocket pet (haven't decided whether it is chinchillas or hamsters) for 4-H this year, it sounds interesting

It's a club for youth focused mainly around agriculture and science.

Re: What to teach 4-H kids about hamsters
I've been thinking of suggesting adding hamsters to our local 4H fair for judging. I wouldn't advocate breeding like they do with other animals (which I don't agree with), but I think it would be a great way to teach kids that hamsters DO require some thought and care just like any other animals they raise.
Please keep us posted on what you come up with because I'm really interested in this.
