Re: How long do they live?
Bellatrix, Syrian Hamster, I've never breed her, she came from one profissional breeder of my country, she was one Black Short Haired Hamster and she died from Wet Tail at the age of 8 years old, this female was my first hamster ever.
Carol, Syrian Hamster, I've breed her before, 2 times, she came from them same breeder, she was one Beije and she died from Wet Tail too at the age of 2 years and 1 month.
Karin, Syrian Hamster, black eyed Cream Short Haired, I've never breed her, she came from one friend as a gift, she died from one accident in her right eye at the age of 1 year and 4 months.

Re: How long do they live?
My first Syrian had to be put down due to old age-related complications when he was around three years and two months old.

Yes, it was a really big surprise, but at the same time one pain, because I was always afraid to see her cage, she was very old and I was just afraid, everyday, it was really hard to see her going away...
I never thought that one Hamster could live that much, but she lived.

Re: How long do they live?
I've had several Syrians over the years but can't remember what ages most of them died except my very first hamster, Suzie and Nibbles but her age is a guess.
Suzie - had one litter (my sister put her male in beside her) died aged 3yrs 7months from old age. This was in the early eighties.
Nibbles - unbred as far as I know. Died approx aged 1 year 8 months from old age.
I also remember hearing of a hamster living to be 7 1/2 years old, no idea if this was male or female. This was also in the early eighties.

Re: How long do they live?
Hey all,
at first i must say that skipping through the thread I was surprised to see how much difference there can be, even within one gender! Anything from 1 - 8! (Maybe a bit like the big variety in weight, as well.)
Here's my lot:
Gilbert, male syrian, from old established pet shop in town, 2 years 9 months, he had a hernia, an operation, and died in the aftermath of it.
Noah, male syrian, from old established pet shop in town, currently 2 years 5 months, but there's problems, i'll make a thread in the illness section in a bit.
Jesse, male syrian, from Pets at Home, he died 2 days after i got him, he wasn't right from the start, i suspected some heridatory illness/ weakness, i never bought from Pets at Home again, as they seem to have a bad reputation for animals as well, but seeing this thread makes me think maybe it was just a one off.
Billy the Kid, male syrian, from old established pet shop in town, currently 1 year 11 months.
