Re: How long do they live?
The longest was my dark golden (SH) syrian male called cuddles. He passed at the grand age of 3 years 9 months
Youngest that died was a female Syrian, a cinnamon. She got wet tail, I never had her long, I was just a young boy and I was left to do everything myself in life so I never had the skills or mentoring to pull her through. She was about 2 months

That' a grand old age. As for the youngest, very sad indeed, so young. It is very important that we all make ourselves familiar with all these things, from whatever source, nowadays - the internet, so that we know what to do.

Re: How long do they live?
I started reading through this from the start but it's 30 pages or more so gave up! I've had one previous hamster who moved in with me along with a boyfriend. Male, named hammy (we were so unoriginal back then lol!). Died aged 2 after getting a large lump like a goitre on his neck. It didn't seem to bother him but vet decided it needed operating on and warned us hamsters don't survive anaesthetics well and it was a big op - he died under anaesthetic. I came home with an empty carrier and cried.
From what I saw in the early pages 8 years seems to be the longest living hamster - has anyone had anything older than that?
The pyometra thing seems a bit of a curse on the females - I wonder what can trigger it - it's an infection isn't it? But some of these things can be triggered by hormonal imbalances in humans. But anything pyo means pus so it's infection. Metra is from Endometrium (the lining of the womb) - just quoting my nursing stuff there - I assume it's the same with hamsters.
Apparently in humans (in which it is very rare) there is usually some other underlying gynaecological problem or cancer, but it makes you wonder if female hamsters had hysterectomies after they've had a litter or two (or if they aren't going to be bred) if they'd live longer - except surgery is a risk too.

Re: How long do they live?
I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute with, I only had one other hamster die. He was a male Campbell's dwarf and lived to be about 3 and a half years. He died while I was out of town for a few days and my mom was watching him, but I am pretty sure it was old age. He was quite old.

Re: How long do they live?
I can't really remember the ages my hamsters live to when I was much younger (first started caring for hamsters at 10 years old). I know for the earliest ones it wasn't very long (I think 18months on average). I had two robo males at one point; one lived to two years, his brother passed a couple of months after.
These are from the past 5-6 years. The first four were with me all at the same time, roughly...and the three males died within the same week. Yeah, was painful. =/
Hammy - Syrian, male, 28 months, PTS (tumors).
Fluffy 1 - Syrian, male, 8 months. Wet tail. =(
Dinky - Robo, male, anywhere from 18 months to 2 years (adopted). Unknown.
Summer - Syrian, female, 25 months. Old age?
Fluffy 2 - Syrian, male, 26 months. PTS (tumors).
Fluffy 3 - Syrian, male, 25 months. PTS (heart failure.)

Re: How long do they live?
When I got Snow (girl Syrian hamster) on the 20th of January from Pets at Home sadly they wasn't sure what her age was. They assumed that she was 8-12 weeks. Sadly she passed away on March 25th, that means she could possibly had been young but still she might have been old as they didn't know her age. I think Snow had some type of problem as she was less active and slept all the time and only came out for food and water. Snow had big sides (could have been huge lumps) wasn't sure at the time what it was. Unfortunately we may never know.
