Re: How long do they live?
Did a quick run through of the numbers for syrians and worked out the average lifespan of males and females (as a group, unbred and bred). If it was not mentioned whether or not they were bred, I assumed unbred so there was a lot less data for the bred females.
On average it seems males live a few months longer than females but theres not a lot in it. Interestingly, the hamsters with the maximum lifespans (5-7) were females. Bred females would also appear to live longer than unbred but thats probably due to less data. I also calculated the percentage of deaths due to pyometra, again I think the bred females is high due to the small amount of data.
Average Male Lifespan 24.5 months
Average Female Lifespan (regardless of breeding) 22.7 (11% Pyometra)
Average Unbred Female Lifespan 22.6 months (10% Pyometra)
Average Bred Female Lifespan 23.3 months (22% Pyometra)
My statistics seem to differ slightly to Bekki2308s. This could be due to additional data since her analysis, differences in which data was excluded and possibly some rounding of the numbers.

Re: How long do they live?
So, a friend of mine told me that she has had Syrians that have lived to be 5. I tried to call BS but she stood her ground? Possible?

I am so, so sorry for your loss
To add some data, I had my male djungarian ham for about 15 months. I adopted him as an adult.. so I have no idea how old he was. The death seemed sudden.. so symptoms at all.
