My last one - Alfie, Syrian hamster - lived well over 3 years but that's pretty much unique. Usually when they're approaching 3 years they start to just chill out and don't do much. I've had my share of quick deaths too, reasons unknown, but more often than not 3 years is what I expect.

Lived till aprox 2 years and 6 months
She had diarrhea and blood which was treated by the vet but then she started to go downhill and the diarrhea kept returning but the vet couldn't find a cause.

Humphrey (Syrian)- 2 years 2 months- All his major organs failed starting with his kidneys and we don't know what caused it to start
Henry (Syrian)- 2 years 8 months- old age- squealed like a budgy when I first got him and the stupid pet shop lady tried to sell me two Syrians together -.-
Keith (Chinese) - 2 years- he died on his birthday, we are unsure what caused it but he did have dried blood around his nose.
Ivan (Syrian) - 2 years 3 months - old age- was bullied by the other male hamster in his cage in the pet shop so was a shy little fellow from the start... and he was missing a patch of fur where it had been ripped off my his ex cagemate and never grew back.

Tequila - syrian - male - 3yrs 5mths - tumour in tummy so put to sleep
Indy - syrian - female (not bred from) - 2yrs 8mths - was fine the day before
Zag - russian - male - 1yr 3mths - his eye went red at the bottom (blood inside?) and he died that night so no time to take him to vets.
