Re: How long do they live?
To add a few more,
Mimi, syrian pet store ham - nearly 2 yrs old, passed due to old age
Pop, robo pet store ham - nearly 2 yrs old, put down due to a lacerated tumour
Pip, robo pet store ham - nearly 2 yrs old, passed due to old age
Pumpkin, campbells from a small breeder, 1 and a half, passed in his sleep due to his tumour
I really don't understand why people in your area don't take their hamsters to the vets if they're ill - and to be honest i don't think i ever will. you'd take a horse, dog, ferret, cat .. you name it - to the vets wouldn't you?
If someone lived to 60 years old in the UK where the average lifespan is 80, and died for no apparent reason, i'm sure the reasoning would be old age. the same would apply to a hamster

Re: How long do they live?
Chinese:
Alex - 3years 10 months - possible tumour
Dobby - 9 months - diabetes
Kahlua - 1 year 10 months - uterine bleeding
Boris - unknown - diabetes
Ruby - 1 year 8months - diabetes
Luna - 1year 5months - pyometra
Midori - 1year 5 months - sudden
Moonshine - 1year 8months - tumour
Mousey - 1year 9months - tumour
Callie-Mist - 9months - diabetes
Red Lotus - 1year 8 months - diabetes
Carlos - 6 months - diabetes
Valium - 2years 2 months - sudden
Yan - 2years 9months - sudden
Syrians:
Tia Maria - unknown - pyometra
Bella - 2years 2months - heart failure
Causes are either symptoms or as diagnosed by my vet. Obviously no relatives of the diabetics are used for breeding. My youngsters dying was devastating (as I'm sure it was for others) so I would appreciate sensitivity from other posters both for me and for the other owners who have lost hamsters far before their time.

Re: How long do they live?
If you would have taken a little time to familiarise yourself with the general tone of this forum, you would have noticed it is an open, warm, friendly place with kindhearted supportive posters having nothing less than the utmost care for their and other forum members hamsters.
Everyone is welcomed, people are polite to each other, careful in suggestion of any changes needed, showing compassion and empathy when thing go wrong.
Given that, it seems you have just got off to an unfortunate start here,It's not so much what you are trying to say, more the way you have said it. You ask people to mind their tone with you and not to be judgmental, but given that in very few posts you have managed to upset quite a lot of people, I would suggest it is you that needs to examine your tone.
As I said this is a very friendly and welcoming place, have a good read and you will see that for yourself. If that's not the response you have got, it would be worth asking yourself why.
