Getting a rescue hamster?
Not sure if this is the right section for this question but, as we have a number of cages free at the moment, we were considering a rescue hamster/dwarf hamsters as well as the hamster we are going to get from a breeder when one becomes available.
I would really like to give a home to a rescue hammy but am not sure where to go, our local RSPCA never has rescue hammies apparently (this I think is a good thing hopefully) but I am not sure how well a hammy travels if we had to fetch them which I would be willing to do.
Only our hamsters have been "bought", all the other animals we have owned have been rescues and I would like to carry this on.
Cheers and happy new year

Sometimes the Hamster Clubs have hammes in rescue so you could try contacting the secretaries to enquire. Also P@H have rescue centres in most branches and there are usually hammies in them.
Hamsters travel well in suitable boxes or cages so there would be no problem. Ours travel quite a few hours to shows and they usually just sleep. Several have even been to the Little Chef!

You could also try Hamster Heaven forum - they have a section where hamsters who have been rescued or who need a new home are advertised:
http://www.hamster-heaven.com/cgi-bin/y ... rd=forsale
There aren't any now but if you look through the recent posts you'll see there have been lots of rescues on there.

if you've tried the RSPCA and local small animal rescues, you could look at the free-ad hammies - but only take 'free to a good home' ones, where the person can't keep it anymore...

There are also the 'donation' hams at shows which are usually the large breeders older females which they are looking to move on to make room for younger ones. They are usually 9-12 months and I have seen some lovely girls looking for loving homes.

I suggest looking at trade-it.co.uk , preloved.co.uk and stuff4sale.co.uk in local areas - you will be surprised at what you can find sadly
I have some robos coming to live with me in 2 weeks that I found on a website and the mum has had a litter and the babies will be 4 weeks old then.

Did you ever get a Gabber Rex for them - I've got one spare now if you still need it?

That is a lovely offer, bless you! I am not sure how many babies survived, if any, and Emma has kindly offered me a spare rody from her local freecycle, but if this falls through I will let you know Thanks for thinking of them Julie you are lovely ^.^

I adopted three hamsters last June from a great rescue near me and all worked out well I think it's great that you want to give a home to a rescue hammy. How about having a google search of small animal rescues/shelters near you? Or the RSPCA could have some. Is this RSPCA near you? http://www.rspcahereford.org.uk It says they usually have hamsters.

If you can get anywhere near Nottingham, Kirkby Pet Welfare have loads of hammies looking for homes - I went there for my mice & was surprised by the no.s of dwarves! I'm planning on making a trip up there to get a syrian (if they have one), a pair of gerbils or a pair/group (of already matured & established!!!) dwarves... The hammies in there really could do with rescuing!
