You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
I'm still getting the age comments about having a pet hamster as an older adult. Now when people ask if I have a pet, I just say, "No" to avoid the comments and questions. Feels disloyal, though, to such fantastic creatures! Instead, I should be educating people about what great pets they are for adults.
Don't you think it's amazing how much greatness, life and energy can be in that one tiny body?

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
Hamsters have such huge hearts and great unique personalities. They also have a great zest for life which is why they appeal to people of all ages. I am also an adult hamster owner. Don't worry what others say, be proud and happy that you have such a wonderful companion!!

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
Hi. I'm a senior first time hamster dad ... Theodore is the first pet I've had in 35 years. When I tell people about him they can be sceptical at first but after I've told them all about his antics, his moods, his funny little quirks and how much he makes me laugh I have them hooked. Friends will ask me now ... "So how's Theodore today?" And I'll answer ... "He's being a real goof these days" or "He's in one of his aloof moods and I've barely seen him" or "He's been super grouchy lately" and they will ask "You can tell when they're grouchy?" and I'll answer .. "Oh yes you can .... You really really can tell how and what these little creatures are feeling and thinking - they let you know everyday!"
And so it goes ....

I'm an older hamster owner too but I love them too much to care what anyone else says

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
Pay no attention! I'm 32 and hadn't had a hamster for a while but I'm enjoying it so much already after only a week. I actually think I'm better suited to a hamster now. I have a lot more patience and I'm in a lot more in the evenings as opposed to out with friends or down the pub! I love staying in with my pets and just watching them pottering around and I'm clearly not the only one!

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
I've often been told that hamsters are a 'kids pet' but I'm actually more inclined to disagree. I had my first hamster when I was 10 and I would say that I am a far better owner as an adult than I ever was as a child. For starters, I'm better able to pay for the things that they need but I also feel that an adult has a greater sense of responsibility. Yes, my first ever hamster was looked after and I loved him but there were occasions when I had to be reminded that he needed cleaning out or whatever.
Those that come to the hamster shows will notice that a fairly decent percentage of the regular exhibitors are adults.

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
I still get amused smiles and I tell them how hamsters can be used as therapy pets and are fascinating little creatures, and not just childrens pets. And I still get amused smiles! Thing is I suppose I can understand how people with cats or dogs think - why a hamster for an adult? Yet they don't think it's strange for people to have pet rats. But for me - it's the only pet I have found I am not allergic to! Brilliant. Plus dogs need walking.
I really don't see the difference between an adult having a hamster or having a budgie - it's just an ingrained attitude that they are for little children - maybe because hamsters are gentle, cute and furry.

Re: You Have A Hamster At YOUR Age?
A hamster is a great pet for working people as it is awake when you're around and asleep while your'e at work. it doens't kill wildlife and you only have to pick up its rather harmless poo once a week. it's cuddlier than fish and birds and easy to feed. why have anything else?
