Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I think everyone has pretty much summed everything up
I've recently bought my first pair of Russian hammies, after being a Syrian girl for about 8 years, and it's a real difference to having just the one hammy.
You have to know you're going to give them equal playtime and care/attention, and also money plays a big part..you need to know whether you can afford both and meet their needs
If you do decide to get another one we would love to see pictures

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
Hi
Thanks for all your good advice. I'm going to leave it for a week and then call up to see if she's still on the adoption list. If she is then I'll probably get her.
How much attention is enough? My last hamster wanted to be out all the time and used to wake up at 7pm on the dot so taming her and playing with her was no problem at all but this one seems to be much more content in her cage and doesn't get up until after nine (sometimes 10 or 11) in the evening by which time I'm ready for bed.
I work five days a week and 2 of those days are usually 12 hour days.
How much time should I be dedicating to little Smudge when she seems happier when I'm not around? She has a Hamster Heaven cage with lots of toys and a wheel so she can't get bored.

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I currently have one Syrian and am also looking at getting dwarves when we move (closer to my work so more time with them and more space for the extra cage)
I have had two Syrians at once before and found it difficult as they often wanted to be out at the same time so had to set certain times for each...
I think I would find it easier with one Syrian and two dwarves as the two dwarves would be company for each other... If you get what I mean.
As everyone else has said, it's all a down to personal preference so spend some time thinking about it and then decide. It's better to have too much time for one hamster than not enough time for two. Whatever you decide, good luck

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I have 5 (2 syrians, and 3 dwarves)
all live seperately, so they all get their own time out
they also, all get out at different times, so its easier

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I have 4, 2 syrains, a dwarf and a robo. It's not a lot of work to be sure everyone gets attention and clean cages. It's totally do-able, but you have to be willing to invest the effort.

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
Everyone has their limits, I think even if you want lots of hamsters, its more rewarding to wait for the right one to come along. You will know when enough is enough
I've never planned how many I will have, it just happens I love them all and I find it no problem looking after them all.
For now my numbers will increase as I'm becoming involved in breeding and showing more. But I avoid pet shops. I also want to start a little rescue in the future x

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I never planned to have more than one. To be honest I didn't plan on having any after Minnie passed away (too upsetting when you lose them) until I came across and rescued Smudge. I'll see how the training and taming of Smudge continues this week and reassess next weekend.
I'll let you know how I get on.
In the meantime can anyone tell me how to get the avatars to change pics please?

Re: How many hamsters are too many???
I found that my hamsters chose me and I just couldn't say no to them, which is how I ended up with seven! I had said that 7 was my limit and I would be going no higher, but I'm not sure how much I trust myself about this....
