P@H shavings
So today is Noels clean out day and as per usual i put her in the bath with all her toys so that i could commence with the cleaning. After the usual scrub down, and the replacing of an escapolagist hamster (lord knows hows she's figured a way to get out of the bath ) i started replacing her woodshavings. Now i'll freely admit that i do normally use cheap wilkinsons woodshaving and have never had a problem with them. They're cheap dust free and great value. But today i had to use P@H own brand as i'd had to pick some up whilst running an errand. As i was pulling apart the clumps fom the vaccume pack i felt a stab in by thumb, after investigating i discovered a large wood splinted poking out of the digit. I panicked then and went maticulously through the whole lot to remove anything that might harm my poor ham! i found 5 LARGE splinters and goodness knows how many small ones . I'm horrifyed! I've never had this problem with the wilko value ones as they've always been soft and light.
Has anyone else hd this problem or is it just me being over protective?

Re: P@H shavings
I sometimes find splinters in the P@H shavings but I just pick them out. When I used wilkos woodshavings I found splinters as well...

Re: P@H shavings
you get them in all brands, just another reason why not to use them in my opinion

Re: P@H shavings
I found chunks of wood in megazorb, so no bedding is free from some kind of dangerous part or two.

Re: P@H shavings
Ive found a few splinters in the P@H shavings, a local make and one which I bought in a random shop. Its just something I come to expect now. More often than finding splinters i will just find large chunks of wood in the shavings. Unlike the splinters I don't remove these because Pippy likes to 'hunt' them and collect them in a big pile :L

Re: P@H shavings
The only thing I trust from P@H is the safe bedding, I got my Teal there, I just had to rescue her from that monsterus place!!!

Re: P@H shavings
This is basically why I've been avoiding wood shavings. I had a bag of aspen shavings from a large chain store in the U.S., and it had a lot of sharp big pieces with very jagged edges, and my hams did not like digging through it at all. I'm actually about to receive a trial bag of soft smaller size aspen shavings any day now. If that turns out to be bad too, I'm going to continue using non-shaving beddings.

Re: P@H shavings
I use Megazorb as it's so soft, I've never been a fan of woodshavings. Always seemed too sharp.
