Default Smokey had to go to the vets!

I noticed on saturday night that Smokey's right eye was a little closed and looked watery, we thought he must have poked his eye on the substrate I had used because I had used wood chips and some bits of it where had bits of wood.
So I changed it back to megazorb on sunday but by monday his eye looked red and sore.
Mum took him to the vets this morning they said that he probably did poke it on the substrate. They decided to put him under anaesthetic to see if there was anything in his eye irratating him, Mum had to sign a form saying she knew he might not come out of the anaesthetic! Luckily he did, we don't know if they found anything because mum didn't see the vet when she picked him up at lunchtime which is a bit anoying! But he has been given some eye drops called Tiacil that I have to put in his eye 4 times a day which is a bit of a challenge! I did the drops for the first time when I got home and his eye was completly shut and stuck together with puss and he hated it when I put the drops in, poor thing I hope he gets better soon!

Aww poor little thing, sorry to hear he's having a rough time of it. You'll have loads of fun doing the eye drops I bet It's for his own good though so do persevere with it.

Aww poor wee Smokey. Hams are quite prone to eye infections. Hope the drops do the trick and he is better soon.

Aww that sucks!! Good luck getting those drops in his eyes! That sounds like a really difficult task...especially doing it four times a day!! WOW!

Hope he is feeling better soon!

Sorry to hear about Smokey, Hana, hope he's on the mend now and that it's not too difficult to get the drops in.

I remember giving eye drops to our rabbits on more than one occasion - a usually placid and cuddly animal becomes really stroppy once they know what you are trying to do to them

He certainly does become stroppy! He squeels and squeels when I put them in. I'd rather have to put drops in Smokey than in Snowy because Snowy bites so that would be even harder. His eye is completly closed over now he looks like a little old man stubbling around because he can't see out of 1 eye! bless him!

Is the eye completely gummed up Hana? If it is the drops may not be getting in to do the job. Is it possible to bathe it open so they get in? Oh gee I bet this is so hard for you. We sometimes have to bathe with cooled boiled water with a little salt in it and then gently pull the eye open. I hope you can manage it and the drops get in there. May be worth calling the vet to say it is so stuck shut.

Yes it is completly crusted over before I put the drops in! But then I put the drop on his closed eye and he goes mental washing his eye and he kind of massages it in and then it opens after he washed it, so I think it is going in.
I was thinking of bathing it before, I will try it tonight if it is closed over. It is also really hard because the drops arn't like liquid drops there more of a gel so it doesn't go in easily! Anyway thank you for your thoughts and help!
