I got mango when he was 6months - but he was still in the petshop :L He settled in absolutely fine though! In the future i'd like to start taking in older ones too though, instead of the babiies

The majority of my dwarfies have been older adoption hams that have been brought back to shop or just never been sold. I think they settle in just fine. I have recently took on a syrian hammie my friend could no longer look after she is 1 year old, and I think she is still getting used to me even though with her old mummy she was such a cuddly hamster.

But with dwarfies I think they settle in just the same and get used to you just the same as younger hams would. Syrians maybe a bit more time for them to get used to everything if they are unsure etc.

I took in two older syrians. They kept their old names - Speedy and Hammy. (They didn't live together). Speedy was about a year old and Hammy was nearing two. They did take more time to settle in but I don't know if that's because they were older or because they weren't use to have a gentle human handle them. Speedy was very nervous and hammy slightly aggressive- but with a bit of time they settled right in and became very special hamsters in my life. <3

If I ever have the space available I'd like to set up a small hamster rescue for older hams (1.5 years +), sort of like a hamster retirement home

I love taking on older hams and caring for them

Its great knowing that they will now be loved for the rest of their life, not ever being moved on again. We got our Tilly from a pet shop when she was a year old. She had been bred from but once she turned a year old they no longer wanted her

It worked out for us though as she is beautiful and soooo friendly

We've had a few in the past which have been nervous at first, but given time and patience they have all come round eventually

Its very rewarding knowing you can make a difference to their lives

thankyou, its great to know people have had some great experiences with older hamsters

Porridge is nearing 1 and a half years now and Treo is nearing a year. They are still the same as they were when I first had them though

Peggy was a joy to have as an old lady, shebecame beautifully calm and trusting, although she really didn't show much sign of being old until she was 2.

Oh and the hamsters I'm looking at are a pair of approx 1 year old robos

They could be a challenge seeing as I have no idea how much they've been handled. But their age does give me confidence that they are comfortable together (hopefully moving home won't upset them too much)

I've always wanted to rescue robos, but its so rare they need rescuing near me.
Fingers crossed, I'm gonna need a miracle to persuade my mum xx

I don't find it any different than getting a young hamster.
They all need a home, so.

I rescued Fuu, the owner thought it was a baby of his litter,but in the end i'm sure it was the father who had bad diabetes, he already drank more than his own weight ;O;
He died after 2-3 weeks...but i was so happy that i could gave him things he never saw before like a sandbath and cork. And that i could make him a few happy days was great ;D
I cried a lot because he was my truecoming dream...but i think it was worth it for him <3
