Girls or boys
Which do you prefer and why?
I usually go for boys but have one of each now (syrian), but Im looking at getting a couple of dwarfs to complete our hammy brood. but I really dont know what sex to go for. are there any pro's and cons for either sex (prob getting campbells (sp?) ) and which have the least chance of fighting and needing spliting up? I really want a pair.. or more lol, so we can watch them interact.
So which sex do you prefer and why!?

Re: Girls or boys
I only have Syrians but I feel rather guilty saying this but I prefer boys, I have 2 boys and 1 girl and found the boys ALOT easier to tame, and alot more laid back!

Re: Girls or boys
If I'm honest, a majority of dwarves will not live together so it's best to get a single - for their safety.
The best dwarfves that like to interact and will live together are robos but they are not as easy to handle. Campbell's will sometimes live together but are a little nippy around people whereas Winter White's have less chance of getting along but are fine with human contact. Chinese also are not the best in pairs but are fine on their own, they like to snuggle with their owners but prefer a lot of toys in their cage (to hide in). Male dwarves always tend to do better as they are less territorial than females.
None are really great at getting along and many members on here end up seperating their pairs, the hamsters are happy living alone as long as they get regular cuddles and playtime.

Re: Girls or boys
I voted girls. I've only had one male hamster, a Syrian, and he was my first - he did bite, but it may have just been due to my nine-year-old self's ineptitude. I'm currently taming a Syrian girl, she is very skittish, but hopefully we'll get there slowly.

Re: Girls or boys
Ive only ever had girl hamsters growing up. I think this came from not liking boys as a young girls (as we all do) but was a habit that stuck. I didn't know there was much difference when it comes to taming.

Re: Girls or boys
I've had a mixture of both and can't really say I prefer one to the other, I just fall in love and that's it!!!! My male dwarfie was the most laid back, easy going, gentle hamster I have ever met, his sister Peanut lives up to her nickname, Nuts!!! She is 32 months old, full of energy, fearless and very nippy, but that's part of what makes her who she is and I wouldn't change it!!!
