Default Robos won't eat fresh fruits & veg

I have been trying to feed my robos various fruits and vegetables, but they won't have any of it. So far I have tried broccoli, peas, carrot, cucumber, banana, strawberry, green beans, cooked potato, and apple.

Does anyone have tips on how to get them to eat fresh fruits and veg? Some sources have indicated that feeding them fresh fruits and veg a couple of times a week is necessary for a balanced diet, is this true?

I'd like to give them a varied and balanced diet, but if it is not essential, then I may skip it altogether. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello

It is not necessary for hamsters to have fruit or veg in their diet. Many people like to give them fruit or veg as a variation to their normal diet or for a treat, but it is not essential, and obviously you cant force them to eat something they dont want, so if they dont like it then it doesnt matter.

I usually give expectant mothers and babies a small amount of fruit, and all of my hamsters get some sort of fruit or veg very occasionaly, usually when they go to a show, but apart from that i dont really feed much fruit and veg at all, so dont worry about it, they will be fine with just their normal diet

For a treat you could try a small piece of plain cooked chicken, plain scrambled egg or boiled egg - i have never known a robo turn down these tasty treats!

I dont think it is that necessary, if they dont want it than they probably dont feel like they need it. Relax, try again in couple of months, and just be sure that they have fresh water

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone!

Tammy, I have tried boiled egg (the white part) but they won't eat that either. I will try scrambling it next time

Fluffymunchkins, I have been using the list for reference. It's been so helpful

I won't be encouraging them to eat something they don't like, and thanks to your advice, my mind is at ease.

Remember they only eat really tiny amounts of fresh food. nothing more than a fingernail sized piece of fruit or veg twice a week. Any more than this and they could develop diarrhoea. You can also try giving them dried fruit and veg which is easier on their digestive system.

as said perviously by others, they dont need any additonal 'treats' and many dont use fruit or veg unless a hamster is traveling so needs a water source.

robos are the least food oriented hamster, so its not surprising to me that they are not bothered by what you are offering, they are happy with their mix and are not tempted by any additionals.

only worry if they really loose weight rapidly, it can be worth keeping a record of a hamsters weight to monitor this.

about the only treats my robos have regularly bothered with are extra trill seed, and the occasional millet spray...so small seeds again :P

they are very well known for being fussy eaters, and of course many give them way too much mix so they pick out their favorite bits from the mix all the time so live off the treatish bits! its one reason why trying to hand tame a robo by offering food can be really pointless

They are indeed very picky eaters! They actually had small nibbles of blueberry two days ago They go crazy for peanuts and budgie seeds though and would happily sit on my hand to eat it. It's the most adorable sight
