Default Do you have a recipe for a homemade mix for Robo's?

I currently feed my hamsters the lab blocks and a small portion of Ecotrition Essential Blend, this is what they were eating at the pet store..

I certainly wouldn't mind making my own hamster blend for my robo's realizing they have different needs than the larger hamsters..

Does anyone have a recipe to share with directions as to portions to use of each ingredient?

Thank you!

Fluffymunchkins has a great mix that she uses for her little ones - she should be along soon, or you could PM her

hello! you called yes if you search 'homemade mix' then my thread should come up
I actually use this mix for all my hamsters (syrian, robo and russian dwarf) As it has a bit for them all.
The main base of the mix is harry hamster -that would be hazel hamster for you in the US.
Theres a few other recipes about online so you can personalize and make it with what you have availible. But using a base mix of a pet shop mix gives you confidence it will still provide whats necessary

Thank you!
So here the ingredients on my shopping list:
  • Hazel Hamster (US) - 8 cups
  • Canary/Finch seed - 1 cup
  • Organic Rolled Oats - 1 cup
  • Organic Pearl Barley - 1 cup
  • Organic Hemp Seed (if I can find it) - 1 cup
  • Organic Whole Wheat Pasta - 1 cup
  • Organic Green Lentils - 1 cup
  • Organic Red Lentils - 1 cup
  • Organic Flax Seed Cereal - 1/2 cup
  • Organic Puffed Wheat Cereal - 1/2 cup

Does that look good, are the ingredient portions alright?

yep that all looks good
The proportion look fine to me too!
I found hemp seed by surprise when i looked around my local pet store and yo can buy it loose for really cheap. So look somewhere in the bird section and you might find it.
Although all the ingredients cost quite a bit at first, they do last you quite a while. It cost me about £5 for all my ingredients but it makes about 3-4 times equivelent to a abag of average hamster food.

Thank you Mel! I was wondering about tossing in some of my dogs dry food, they eat Orijen a high quality high protein kibble diet. Do you ever mix in dog food as another protein source?

they don't really need it as the hary hamster contains all the necessary protein
I know a few people use dry cat food though!

I made my homemade hamster mix tonight..

Hamster Mix:
3 Cups Ecotrition Essential Blend (their previous food)
3 Cups Hazel Hamster (US), Harry Hamster (UK)
1 Cup Organic Green Lentils
1 Cup Organic Red Lentils
1 Cup Organic Barley Pearled
1 Cup Organic Rolled Oats
1 Cup Organic Hemp Seed
1 Cup Budgie/Parakeet Seed Mix

I put a small portion of the new hamster mix into an airtight glass jar and vacuumed sealed the rest of the mix for freshness. I also vacuum sealed the left over ingredients so they're fresh next time I make the hamster mix.

I plan to continue to feed lab blocks because they like them and they're good for their teeth.

So far Buttercup likes it a lot, Tinkerbell and Jasmine haven't eaten yet I think they eat in the middle of the night because they are obsessed with their flying saucer when they wake up!
