Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
since Harry ham contains the protein and my mix is mostly made up of that, i'm assuming not including extra protein like kitten food is ok?
Apart from that i do use both porridge oats and a mix of bird seeds. As the mix is for both syrian and dwarf.

Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
I would feed them fresh fruit and veg! They love that just as much as the sugary stuff

Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
Thanks nooboo for giving me the link to your dry mix instructions. Unfortunatly though I'm dyslexic so the quantaties don't make any sense to me... I make my own rat dry mix that I got off another forum I'm part of (although haven't been on for a while due to my depression). My mam translated it all for me so I knew how many handfulls of each thing to put in a Roses tin. I know it off by heart now. My hammie mix is kept in a Terry's choc orange tin (the kinds you get at Christmas), 'cause I've got no room in my tiny house for big buckets full : ) Could you, or someone else, be able to translate it for me into that kind of thing? I know it makes me sound really stupid... sorry.

Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
hmmm that one has some worrying statements... like hamsters are herbivores... when they are not...thus why they eat the mealworm, they eat insects and such in the wild.
It also says there is no limit to fruit and veg...there is!! in fact i tend to only give veg etc when they are going to be away from water, like in shows or for travel, and rarely give it as an additional treat. They all come from places where water is at a minimum, and mainly eat foods low in water, like nuts and seeds (though tasty wet insects i guess at times!) still cucumbers etc with there high water amount, and so forth wouldnt be about! certainly doesnt make up most their vitamins as it says, they come from the mix, and many main foods add additional vits to the biscuit pieces!
just all in all a rather worrying article.

Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
i made a thread with mine, as i also work in cup measurements rather than grams etc.
search 'homemade hamster mix' on here and it should pop up.
Although ignore all the stuff about corn and flaked peas being taken out, i've since found out thats unescessary.
Scroll down thorught the pages till you find the recipe and i put some pics too
You might not like it, but my hams love the mix i made. It is my own idea taken from different parts of others mixees.

Homemade hamster mix
although the new measurements to make it 10 cups in total is:
5 cups of harry hamster food, then 1 cup of each other ingredient

Re: Treats and Dwarfs...
Thank you Fluffy, that's really helpful : ) I can understand cups, so I'll definatly be starting that. I've already added Trill to the basic mix, and taken the raisins out, but I'll make it more like that one now I know how!
