Food we share with hamsters
Hi all,
My Ludvik is a keen veg eater, but buying even one small piece of veg seems to be enormous amount for a little hamster. Very often poor Ludvik just eats scraps of my food, but at least his diet is various and causes less food waste for me
So the food we often share is: "end" piece of veg like tomato, cucumber, carrot, courgette; whites of an egg, very small pieces of cooked chicken. I just save these bits when I prepare my food (or before it).
Sometimes he just has a small piece of cheese/ham from my sandwich. I tend to give him really small amount of that, so he eats it straight away and doesn't hoard in his nest.
obviuosly he gets his everyday share of hamster mix or dry hamster treats.
what food do you share with your hamsters?

Re: Food we share with hamsters
I can relate to this! I personally am unable to eat vegetables due to medical reasons but what I do is buy things my hamster likes and get my partner to finish them off. My hamster is a robo and eats such a tiny amount so the rest has to be eaten quickly.
It is lovely you can share food with your hamster.

Re: Food we share with hamsters
I hate buying veg and throwing it away uneaten. However, on our local market the greengrocer gives me odd bits of cauli, broccoli, that have broken off, even the odd carrot. But I do buy a lot of fruit there. I also share tiny bit of pasta, cheese, egg and chicken with my hammy. Sadly my hammy doesn't like friut!

Re: Food we share with hamsters
I share the same kind of foods as flower pot but not ham as too processed and salty. They also get a bit of our plain porridge or cereal like weetabix or a tiny crust of bread. I buy tofu once a week now which most of them like. I also let them lick a plain yoghurt pot when i'm finished with it.

Re: Food we share with hamsters
I thought many people may do the same.
I also give my hamster plain empty yoghurt pot to lick. He eats this supervised, as I don't trust him with plastic. Recently I have found him trying to chew through UHT milk packaging, while on the free run. Fortunately, I couught him before any damage have been done - to himself or the carpet. The milk has been moved to the safer place.
I think it is great that hamster can eat not only plants, but also meat, egg, ...

Re: Food we share with hamsters
I’m still to try egg or yoghurt with our hamster. Love the sound of a bit of porridge though, I think he’ll like that
We eat quite a lot of veg, Hams loves a bit of grape or apple but I only give those in tiny amounts perhaps twice a week. Otherwise it’s just carrot, broc, cauli and his favourite babycorn.

Re: Food we share with hamsters
Mine have all loved porridge. Must make some for Rafferty (roborovski) as he is getting on a bit and could do with a nice robust meal.
He also love dandelion.

I hope that Rafferty doesn't react to porridge like Gordon did. He jumped into it and then rolled in the sand to get it off him.....
