Insects as animal proteins
Hello,
I'm currently looking through the most nutritous alongside preferred by majority hamsters insect protein. I'm aware of the widely used mealworms, but I was wondering whether silkworms and calciworms are safe, and how often they should be fed.
Furthermore, I was wondering whether syrians enjoy grasshoppers/crickets, as the response is heavily varied amongst different forums.

Calciworms are safe. I feed them myself. Silkworms are also ok, and waxworms.
I've never tried Syrians with grasshoppers or crickets, whether live or dried. My dwarf hamsters have liked dried grasshoppers. I suppose it depends on whether your Syrian likes insects at all as some do, some really don't.
Hamsters seem to find mealworms particularly delicious. I use calciworms as the protein in my main mixes because they provide a lot of calcium, and use mealworms as treats. Fresh waxworms also seem very popular.

It's not so much the forums but down to the preferences of the individual hamster.
Most of my Syrians don't like mealworms or insects but they get animal protein from a bit of boiled or scrambled egg.
The Robos and dwarfs like mealworms. I've bought an insect mix of different worms, crickets, grass hoppers etc before but not one of them was keen on it.
I think it's a matter of trying out different things to find out what your hamster likes. If it's rejected give it to the garden birds.
If you decide to feed live meal worms you need to pinch the head off before feeding it to your hamster.

I see, how often do you feed the calci-worms though? Weekly?

Since they're part of their main diet, they get about 3 per day. If you're feeding insects on top of an already balanced main diet, you should probably feed less, 1-2 per day.
