Default Hamster food

I am struggling to find a good quality hamster food without sesame as I am allergic. I know I have asked this previously but wondered as we have new members if anybody knows of one. I think I may have to make my own as I cannot take any risks due to my allergy. My partner would do this as he understands micro and macro nutrients and is going to research. I know it is complicated and expensive but I feel it may be my own option.

All the recommended foods in the hammingway data base contain sesame.

Does Harry Hamster contain sesame as well?

I'm not at home or i'd check a bag. I know some people class HH as an inferior food mix but it's a good and balanced allrounder.

I put it to the test once and gave our late Syrian Henry a bowl with HH and a bowl with Rodipet mix. He preferred the HH but Syrians often don't like small grains.

With a sesame allergy, a Syrian may be more suited to you because dwarfs especially like their small seeds and bird millets which are sesame seeds.

No but it is rated as an 'average' food on the hamming way. I also heard it cannot be fed to dwarf hamsters and I am not sure on the species I will have. I planned on getting food for all species to be safe.

I can't see why it can't be fed to dwarf hamsters, even Robos can manage it. Yes, i do feed Bunny Dreams Expert to our dwarfs because of the smaller texture. It seems more appropriate but i chuck some HH in sometimes to give them something to chomp on.

Like with a lot of hamster related topics, opinions vary, a lot.

Personally, i believe that a hamster's health and life expectancy depends more on genetics than whether they've been fed Harry Hamster or Rodipet.

I do understand that you want the very best for your future hamster and totally respect that.

If you decide to make your own mix I have a tool you can use. I always tell people, it is just a tool, not a substitute for your own research.

Here it is: Please Wait... | Cloudflare

The "target values" are configured for gerbils of course but there's zero research on dwarf hamster nutritional needs anyway. Please do read through the accompanying notes. They are long but they take you through each nutrient and explain how much various different rodents need. Your partner's knowledge will of course help a lot too.

I don't think Harry Hamster is that bad for a Russian/hybrid dwarf in your situation, especially if you mix in some extra small seeds and grains.

Thank you Ria. You are very kind and helpful. I did not know Robos could eat Harry Hamster. I thought the food may be too big for them. I wonder if I could buy Harry Hamster and add a few different bits to it.

Thank you very much for this. I will show my partner this link. It may be an idea to add some small seeds and grains to Harry Hamster too. I appreciate your help.

Dwarfs probably prefer a smaller grained mix because it's easier to pouch but i have read of people on here feeding Robos Harry Hamster. None of the Robos i've fostered were on a dwarf mix.

I'm sure that you could buy Harry Hamster and add to it.
One to avoid is the Mr Johnson's mix. I bought that once and gave it to the garden birds. It is very fruity and sugary. Henry didn't like it either.

I will add Harry Hamster to the commercial foods in the ingredients list so you can use it with the calculator if you decide to go down that route. It will be at the very bottom of the ingredients list.

Thank you for these tips they are very helpful. I can imagine how a dwarf hamster would prefer smaller grains.
