Smile Feeding the finicky

I have to mention that I am learning quite a bit of knowledge here in Hamster Central. From this knowledge (being of advice and suggestive shares from others whom are/have experienced) I found a way to ease some of my concerning frustrations towards my Roborovski Dwarf Hamster, Cinnamon Bun. I have come to a final conclusion that she is NOT a normal Roborovski at all, she has her own personality; her likes and dislikes.

For a while my concern of her not eating was deeper than the depth of her feeding dish, I was replacing her un-eaten seeds every other day with concerns of her starving herself. However, she isn’t starving at all. I learned from others here in HC that she won’t starve and she has a keen sense towards ‘Old’ Vs. ‘New’. It’s true, and I am thankful to this advice that I was given from another hamster lover here in HC.

Instead of me discarding the un-eaten seeds, I would place them in a snackable size Ziploc baggie and store it in the refrigerator. While I was preparing more dehydrated vegetables, I remembered seeing on YouTube where ‘treats’ can be made for Hamsters. So I made some treats from those ‘old’ seeds.
I don’t really have the exact measurements because I kept adding one teaspoon of chia flour and water at a time of each until I reached a dough consistency. The seeds I kneaded in. Yes, it was a messy seedy situation, but it truly was worth it because Cinnamon Bun nibbles on the treat. I shaped the seedy dough into egg shape, being it be Spring and all. I then baked the egg-shaped seed treats in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 F (180 C). I let them cool and they were hard as stones. I removed her dish and served her a seedy egg and she sat there enjoying it. I am storing the treats in an airtight container and give alternately, by giving one egg shaped treat for the first few days then her dish with seeds for the next few days.

She still doesn’t eat everything in her dish, even when I scattered the seeds throughout her place for her to forage. I have checked her peanut home for ‘hoarding’ and I found nothing stashed. I checked the corners and throughout the place and found no stash of seeds either. She is NOT hoarding, which is not normal. I tried her on dried mealworms. Like I mentioned earlier, she has Likes and Dislikes and she is NOT normal! She refuses to even touch the mealworm!! Now what am I to do with this bag of dried mealworms?

The seeded egg treats you made sound wonderful. How cute Cinnamon Bun enjoyed them. I have heard some hamsters dislike meal worms. I think they all have their own quirks.

Once you relax and get to know Cinnamon bun you'll realize that she's quite normal.

Like humans, hamsters differ a lot in their preferences, habits and personalities.

I absolutely detest fish and everything about it but does that make me abnormal. No, so why shouldn't a hamster dislike mealworms, quite a few of ours do.

As long as she appears to be healthy, i wouldn't worry too much. What you can do for your own reassurance is weigh her. Should her weight drop then you have something to worry about.

I do have a scale that weighs in ounces. In the beginning she wasn't even making the scale register at all, it was fluttering for a digital reading. She weighs a whole ounce now! I check her every few weeks, providing she allows it to happen. She is over due on weight check, but I am giving her this time because I evicted her from her smaller place into a larger place that she still seems to be upset over. I placed in more enrichment things to encourage.
